Amazon Prime’s next comic book adaptation is Sex Criminals starring Kumail Nanjiani

Anything is possible, it seems. Sex Criminals, the critically acclaimed Image Comics series from creators Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, is getting a live-action adaptation from Prime Video. While that might not sound odd, given the high number of adaptations the Amazon-owned streamer already has, the content of Sex Criminals must surely be what has kept it from being adapted until now. There was even a prior attempt a decade ago that went nowhere.

Sex Criminals centers on a woman for whom time stops when she has sex. She meets a man with the same power, and together they have sex, stop time, and rob banks. It’s an excellent story idea, carried out practically flawlessly by Fraction and Zdarsky. However, it’s still a story that relies on these two people constantly having sex, which may have been a turn-off, even in the era of sex-obsessed prestige shows like Game of Thrones.

The series hails from co-creators Tze Chun, Emily V. Gordon, and Kumail Nanjiani, with Gordon and Nanjiani’s Winter Coat Films producing alongside Prime Video, Fraction and Zdarsky, and LuckyChap. In addition to producing, Nanjiani will play a role in the series, though it’s not noted which one. If we had to guess, he’s a lock for Jon, the male lead.

“I’ve been a fan of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s Sex Criminals since the first issue hit the stands,” Chun said in a press release. “This has been my dream project for over a decade, and co-creating this show with Emily and Kumail has been one of the creative highlights of my career.”

Added Gordon and Nanjiani in a statement, “Sex Criminals is the exact kind of thing Winter Coat aims to bring to life: love stories in weird places. From the moment LuckyChap brought us Matt and Chip’s comic book, we knew we wanted to bring these characters to screen and are so excited to do that alongside Tze Chun and Prime Video.”

Thus far, no casting beyond Nanjiani has been announced, nor have any other details about the project been relealed. But someday, you’ll be able to watch Sex Criminals on Prime Video.
