Sony Pictures Classics’ highly acclaimed proshot of the Tony-winning Broadway musical Merrily We Roll Along is officially heading to Netflix in the United States on April 4th, 2026.

If you missed out on the spectacular, record-breaking run of Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical—or if you simply didn’t catch the theatrical release in cinemas late last year—Netflix is bringing the front-row Broadway experience straight to your living room.

Here is everything you need to know about the Merrily We Roll Along proshot coming to Netflix.

What is Merrily We Roll Along?

For the uninitiated, Merrily We Roll Along is a legendary 1981 musical featuring music and lyrics by the late, great Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth.

The story follows the turbulent, decades-long relationship of three lifelong friends: composer Franklin Shepard, lyricist/playwright Charley Kringas, and writer Mary Flynn. But there’s a brilliant catch—the story is told in reverse chronological order. We start at the bitter, cynical end of their friendship in the late 1970s and roll backwards through the years, ending at the hopeful, starry-eyed beginning of their journey in 1957.

This specific film captures the 2023-2024 Broadway revival directed by Maria Friedman, which famously brought the notoriously tricky show the widespread critical acclaim and box office success it always deserved. Captured live at New York’s Hudson Theatre in June 2024, the stage production went on to sweep the Tony Awards, taking home Best Revival of a Musical.

Who stars in the musical?

The phenomenal central trio is the beating heart of this production, and the proshot brings the original Broadway revival cast directly to your screen. The main cast includes:

  • Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter, Hamilton) as Franklin Shepard
  • Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, Miracle Workers) as Charley Kringas
  • Lindsay Mendez (Carousel, Wicked) as Mary Flynn

Both Groff and Radcliffe took home Tony Awards for their stellar performances. They are joined by a fantastic supporting cast, including Krystal Joy Brown as Gussie, Katie Rose Clarke as Beth, and Reg Rogers as Joe.

Wait, isn’t there another Merrily We Roll Along movie?

Yes, but don’t get them confused! Director Richard Linklater (Boyhood) is currently filming a feature-length cinematic adaptation of the musical starring Paul Mescal, Ben Platt, and Beanie Feldstein. True to Linklater’s ambitious style, that movie is actually being filmed in real-time over the course of 20 years. You won’t be seeing that one on Netflix anytime soon.

The version dropping on Netflix this April is the live stage recording (proshot) of the Broadway production, which Sony Pictures Classics distributed in cinemas back in December 2025.

Netflix is no stranger to bringing the Great White Way to our screens. Merrily We Roll Along joins a growing list of stage-to-screen recordings on the platform, sharing a cozy neighborhood with Springsteen on Broadway, John Mulaney and Nick Kroll’s Oh, Hello on Broadway, and the infamous Diana: The Musical. Most recently, they acquired the George Clooney play Good Night, and Good Luck. They’re also recording their Stranger Things play for a release.
