The Pitt star Patrick Ball is well aware that some fans of the HBO medical series believe his character, Dr. Frank Langdon, should date Dr. Melissa “Mel” King (Taylor Dearden).
During an August 2026 interview with Vanity Fair, Ball was asked how he felt about the Mel and Langdon shippers of the world.
“I think that’s great. I’m so glad everybody’s having so much fun,” said Ball with a laugh.
He then noted that fans on social media have paired other Pitt characters, like Dr. Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) with both Dr. Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) and Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy).
“The fandom has taken on a life of its own, where everybody has gotten all these spin-off fan fiction things that they’re writing. They really want Langdon and Mel to get together. They seem to really want Robby and Whitaker [Gerran Howell] to get together. They really want Robby and Abbot [Shawn Hatosy] to be a thing. And so that is great. That has nothing to do with me, but I’m glad everybody’s having a lot of fun,” continued Ball while speaking to Vanity Fair.
While Ball is supportive of viewers who are interested in a romance blooming between Mel and Langdon, he previously stated he views the two characters as platonic. For instance, in a March 2026 interview with CBS Morning, the actor reacted to “the chatter about [Langdon] and Dr. Mel King becoming a couple” by stating he appreciated that the co-workers have a close, platonic bond. Ball also referenced that his character has a wife.
“I think it’s rare that you get to see a completely platonic and healthy friendship between the genders like that. I think it’s a really lovely friendship that they have,” said Ball, who has appeared on The Pitt since its first season, which premiered in January 2025.
The third season of The Pitt is currently in production.
