Something was disturbingly off about Shane Gillis’s monologue on Saturday Night Live last weekend, and one person who noticed and took to social media to put the show on blast was Toronto’s Dan Levy.

Levy criticized Gillis for a joke about women wearing short shorts at the gym during his appearance on Saturday Night Live. Gillis joked that women who wear short shorts to the gym look like “whores,” adding that men are not allowed to look at them.

Levy responded in an Instagram video, saying he was shocked the joke made it onto live television.

“Women wearing short shorts at the gym doesn’t make them whores,” Levy said. “It makes the men calling them whores misogynists.”

The Schitt’s Creek star also said more men need to speak out against this kind of language, arguing that the way women are portrayed in the media can influence how they are treated in real life.

“I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television,” he added.

Gillis has faced controversy before. He was originally hired by SNL in 2019 but was dropped shortly afterward when old podcast clips surfaced showing him making racist and homophobic comments. He has since hosted the show three times.

The latest joke also drew criticism from SNL viewers, and, not surprisingly, some fans took to Gillis defense, saying comedians should be free to make jokes even if they are, well, misogynistic.
