The world of romantasy is filled with love stories, highly fantastical settings, and worlds readers can’t get enough of. In the case of the Empyrean series by prolific author Rebecca Yarros, her latest book in the world of Navarre is yet another smash hit.
Published in late September, Threshing Day is a collection of short stories all focusing on different characters in Yarros’ expansive and massively popular universe. The book was an instant bestseller on The New York Times and has proven to be wildly popular among readers. On Goodreads, the biggest platform for readers online, the book holds the top spot for the “Most Read Books this Week” amongst its users.
On Goodreads, Threshing Day has been ranked over a quarter of a million times and holds a 4.3 overall rating.
Within the world of the Empyrean series, a “threshing” is an annual event taking place on October 1st where every first-year rider at the Basgiath War College attempts to bond with a dragon to continue their journey of becoming a dragon rider. The stakes are massive, as a bond with a dragon is typically lifelong. Failure to do so is immensely dangerous and results in death for the new cadets.
Threshing Day focuses on thirteen different stories and POVs taking place during the event. The collection focuses on the following characters and their subsequent dragons:
- Brennan Sorrengail
- Mira Sorrengail
- Xaden Riorson
- Garrick Tavis
- Dain Aetos
- Bodhi Durran
- Imogen Cardulo
- Rhiannon Matthias
- Sawyer Henrick
- Ridoc Gamlyn
- Liam Mairi
- Sloane Mairi
- Aaric Graycastle
These different POVs provide a fresh take on the world of the Empyrean series and has even been called “the first faithful POV” by Yarros herself.
The next full-length novel in the series has yet to be formally announced; however, earlier this year Yarros did confirm she is working on it via her personal Instagram page.
Threshing Day and the first three novels in the Empyrean series are out now and available wherever books are sold.
