Netflix has become a pretty reliable home for horror limited series, whether the scares come from a creepy new house, a sleepy island community, or something considerably harder to explain. The Watcher turned a seemingly idyllic home into a nightmare, while Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass brought supernatural horror and family drama together.

Now, Netflix is heading somewhere considerably wetter for its next horror thriller.

A new six-episode limited series is about to plunge viewers into a small Newfoundland fishing town where something terrifying is lurking beneath the surface. There are mysterious deaths, a strange iceberg, family secrets, and an unidentified sea creature.

The series is called Below, and Netflix has released its official trailer ahead of its upcoming world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. All six episodes will arrive on Netflix on Oct. 8.

What is Below about?

Below follows Calvin Penney, a stubborn but big-hearted fisherman played by Josh Hartnett (Oppenheimer, Trap), who lives in a small Newfoundland town with his family. Calvin has spent decades haunted by the mysterious death of his father, but the past comes rushing back when an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing the community.

Things get stranger when a massive iceberg drifts into the harbor. Despite warnings to stay away, boats head out to investigate, only to discover that whatever is lurking beneath the water is far more dangerous than anyone expected. As the town descends into chaos, Calvin teams up with Fonda Howander, a visiting marine researcher played by Mackenzie Davis (Station Eleven, Speak No Evil), to figure out what they’re dealing with and protect his family.

That includes Calvin’s son Wade Penney, played by Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, The New Mutants), who becomes increasingly caught up in the mystery. The trailer suggests the creature could be connected to the death of Calvin’s father, raising the possibility that whatever is haunting the town has been lurking beneath the surface for decades.

Created by Jesse McKeown, whose credits include The Umbrella Academy and The Sinner, Below mixes supernatural horror, local mythology, family drama, and small-town suspense. The series was filmed in Newfoundland and Labrador, making the isolated coastal setting an important part of its story.

The trailer still keeps the creature itself mostly hidden, but it promises plenty of ocean chaos.
