Open World sends its avatars to the real world for the final movie in the series

While 1995’s Jumanji follows the concept of the original children’s book more closely, its 2017 sequel, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, turns the board game into a video game and sucks the players into it instead. The only way to return to the real world after being teleported into the world of Jumanji is to complete the game. Despite these changes in its concept, Welcome to the Jungle was a box-office success, grossing over $950 million.

Two years later, movie theaters across the nation filled up with fans who wanted to see its sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level. Fans were excited to sit down and watch another two hours of action-packed shenanigans, this time as the gang tried to figure out why Jumanji was plagued by a dangerous drought.

It’s been nearly seven years since its release, and fans have been eagerly awaiting news on more Jumanji movies. Thankfully, they are in luck, as Sony has granted a first look at the fifth and final movie in the Jumanji series, Jumanji: Open World, which features the same familiar faces as the avatars, and Spencer Gilpin from Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level.

In Jumanji: Open World, the avatars somehow find themselves in the real world. There are dangers that they can’t even begin to fathom lurking around each corner — but thankfully, they can respawn. In the trailer, Shelly is hit by a truck, and then he returns unharmed almost immediately. Viewers who would like to see the world of Jumanji once more don’t have to worry, as the group eventually makes it there.

The actors playing the avatars will once again have to take on a different role as they are assigned a completely different set of humans. This time around, players can watch Spencer’s mom, Janice, turn into Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) as she discovers that she has impressive muscles and can easily take on hordes of bad guys. Janice’s little nephew, Tyson, becomes Mouse (Kevin Hart). This character duo has fans particularly excited, as the dynamic between Johnson and Hart is always one of the highlights of the movies. As for Spencer, he gets Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan) as his avatar. And lastly, the restaurant chef with the thick Eastern European accent, Donatas, gets to join the crew as the one and only Shelly (Jack Black).

Jake Kasdan, who worked on the two previous entries in the series, returns as director. Kasdan’s return, topped with the movie’s unique concept, shows that Jumanji: Open World has everything it needs to be another box-office success.

It will be hilarious to see these strange video game characters trying to navigate life in the real world, and it’ll be just as fun witnessing how Spencer and his family handle this situation when they’re transported to Jumanji.

Jumanji: Open World will be released exclusively in theaters on Christmas Day later this year.
