Record Number of Americans Planning Cruise Vacations in 2027

AAA’s cruise forecast projects 22.4 million U.S. passengers will travel on ocean cruises next year

For the fifth year in a row, the number of Americans planning cruise vacations is expected to hit a record high. AAA projects 22.4 million people in the U.S. will go on domestic and international ocean cruises in 2027, a 3.6% increase over 2026. This year is also expected to end with higher than projected numbers, as more travelers turn to cruising for its convenience, value, and variety.

“Cruising offers a unique type of vacation because you unpack once and visit multiple destinations with meals and entertainment included,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. “The key is finding the right cruise that meets your needs, and that’s where travel agents come in. Working with an advisor ensures you’re booking a ship with amenities and activities that fit your interests and lifestyle.”

Why is cruise demand so high?

Cruise demand in the U.S. has been rising since 2023, when it surpassed pre-pandemic numbers. In 2019, 14.2 million Americans went on ocean cruises, and that number is projected to be 22.4 million in 2027, a 57% increase.  Many travelers are prioritizing shared experiences with family and friends, and they like knowing how much they’re spending on a vacation before the trip even starts. Over 90% of U.S. cruise passengers rate their experience as good or very good, and that’s why the industry has strong repeat business, with 93% of travelers booking again.

AAA Travel Agent Advice: Book early before desirable cabins sell out and download the cruise line’s app ahead of your trip to familiarize yourself with the features. For Alaska cruises, start planning your vacation even earlier, since that season is shorter, and inventory is limited.

Why are Caribbean cruises so popular?

The Caribbean is by far the preferred destination among U.S. cruise passengers with 71% of the pie. Cruise lines have made investments in private islands in the Caribbean, offering passengers exclusivity and additional amenities. They’ve also deployed mega vessels in the region which hold at least 4,500 passengers and offer a wider range of activities, entertainment, and dining options. The Caribbean’s proximity to U.S. ports is another reason why so many Americans book these trips. In fact, the three busiest cruise ports in the world are in Florida: Miami, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale.

AAA Travel Agent Advice: Fly into your port city the day before your scheduled cruise departure. That gives you time to make last-minute changes if there are flight delays or cancelations.

Why are more passengers booking shorter cruises?

For many people, going on a weeklong cruise isn’t feasible due to work, school, or other obligations. Even though 7-night cruises are still the most popular, more Americans are booking shorter-length cruises. In 2025, 45% of U.S. passengers who traveled on ocean cruises booked itineraries of 6 nights or less, compared to 2019 when 39% did the same. Travelers looking for a quick getaway are booking shorter cruises to enjoy a few days at sea without having to take too much time away from their daily routines.

AAA Travel Agent Advice: Make the most of your limited time by reserving excursions, specialty dining, and spa treatments in advance. Save money by bringing sunscreen, snacks, and sundries from home to avoid buying them onboard at a higher price.

Why is working with a travel agent the best way to book a cruise?

With so many cruise lines and destinations, deciding which itinerary to choose can be overwhelming. Are you a beach lover or thrill seeker? Do you want to relax on the ship or head out on shore excursions? Which type of cabin should you choose? Instead of individually researching your options, travel agents can lay out your choices and offer special add-ons and onboard credits. Travel advisors are especially helpful when planning milestone celebrations and multigenerational vacations because they handle the logistics and throw in special touches!

AAA Travel Agent Advice: Ask your travel agent to walk you through travel insurance options to give you peace of mind in case of any emergencies during your trip. Not all policies are the same, and your advisor can explain the fine print.

Cruise Forecast Methodology

This forecast relies on cruise-related analytics from Cruise Intelligence Platform (Tourism Economics’ proprietary database for the cruise industry), economic forecasts prepared by Oxford Economics, and assumptions on the future path of the tourism industry.

In this analysis, U.S. cruise passenger volume refers to ocean cruises taken by U.S. residents. It includes cruises that depart from U.S. and international ports.
