What’s new, Calgary?
Village Square’s Thunder Slide is getting a colourful new replacement
The Thunder Slide may be gone, but its new replacement is already looking pretty fun. The City of Calgary just revealed the design for the new waterslide at Village Square Leisure Centre,
The new slide will be fully enclosed, with plenty of twists, turns, translucent sections, and changing light effects throughout the ride. It’s expected to open by the end of 2027 as part of the renovated leisure centre.
A new Calgary exhibit is diving into the history of Halloween
Back in the day, Halloween looked a little different. Before pumpkin carving and trick-or-treating became part of Halloween traditions, Southern Alberta celebrated the holiday in its own way, and the Lougheed House is looking back at it.
Its new Tricks, Treats and Traditions: A History of Halloween in Southern Alberta exhibit will feature old photographs, newspaper articles and other pieces of local history
The free outdoor exhibit opens on Friday, Sept. 25, in the gardens at the Lougheed House and runs until Thursday, Nov. 5.
Calgary is about to go from summer to sweater weather
Calgary’s weather has been treating us quite nicely lately, but of course, this is Calgary, and things can change on a dime. This weekend will be a perfect example.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, temperatures are expected to drop from the low 20s earlier in the week to around 12° C on Saturday, with a 60 per cent chance of showers. Saturday night will get even chillier, with temperatures dropping to around 3°C.
So, if you’ve been getting away with leaving the jacket at home, this might be the weekend to dig it back out.
You’ll soon have a new place to bowl and play games
South Calgary is getting a new spot to bowl and play arcade games this fall. Splitsville Bowl is opening at Township Shopping Centre in Legacy, with 20 bowling lanes and a massive arcade.
The new location will also have food and drinks, and it’ll be the fifth Splitsville Bowl location in Calgary. There’s no exact opening date yet, but we’ll update you when it’s released.
The Flames are getting ready for one last season at the Saddledome
Hockey season is almost here, and we couldn’t be more excited. The Calgary Flames are getting ready for one last season at the Saddledome, before the team moves into Scotia Place for the 2027 to 2028 season.
The Flames will kick off the season at home against the Seattle Kraken on Oct. 1, and they will play 42 home games throughout the season. The final Flames game ever at the Saddledome will be on April 10 against the Vancouver Canucks, and will mark the end of an era for one of Calgary’s most iconic buildings.
