Season 2 of Guy Ritchie’s stylish crime drama The Gentlemen was released on Netflix on Sept. 3. What is The Gentlemen season 3 about?
In The Gentlemen season 1, Eddie returns home from serving as a United Nations peacekeeping officer after his father’s death and learns that a marijuana grow house was operating on his family’s estate. After initially trying to clear his debt to the gang leader Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone), Eddie decides to get deeper into the drug game as a way to restore his estate to its former glory.
That leads to a series of questionable schemes in season 2. Eddie becomes a hereditary peer in the House of Lords in the hopes of passing legislation to decriminalize marijuana, even though Glass wants to kill the bill. He borrows money from Italian mob boss Marco Moretti (Sergio Castellitto) to fund the expansion and winds up having to leverage his estate as collateral to get a loan from the billionaire Fred Johnston (Giancarlo Esposito) to pay Moretti back when the vote fails. Bobby, in turn, buys the debt from Johnston to gain more control over Eddie, who he believes is “evolving” into a worthy inheritor of his drug empire.
Eddie also marries Moretti’s goddaughter, the Italian Countess Isabella (Benedetta Porcaroli), but the day after the wedding, she’s murdered in an explosion meant to kill them both. Eddie learns that the attack was engineered by his older brother Freddy (Daniel Ings) and Gospel John Dixon (Pearce Quigley), a cocaine dealer looking to avenge the death of his own brother in season 1. Freddy’s scheme also includes kidnapping his infant nephew to ensure there are no other competitors to his inheritance. Eddie is able to capture John with the help of a cocaine supplier who Bobby’s daughter Susie (Kaya Scodelario) was working with. Eddie then forces Freddy to kill Dixon with a chainsaw.
Season 3 will deal with the fallout of that betrayal and again push Eddie to choose between being Bobby’s lieutenant and trying to forge his own criminal empire. Eddie’s mother urged him not to kill Freddy, but it will be hard to ever trust his brother again or to let him come home. Meanwhile, the rest of Eddie’s family is understandably nervous about being in such a volatile business.
