1957 Classic Was Just Named the Most Overlooked Psychedelic Rock Song

10 October 20262 Mins Read

One of the most popular rock subgenres is the psychedelic variety. While psychedelic rock isn’t exactly niche, several amazing tunes within the subgenre have been largely ignored.

For instance, the publication Far Out magazine recently released a ranking titled “five overlooked songs that should be included in the history of psychedelic rock.” The list included tunes like “Tale of Brave Ulysses” by Cream (1967), “Life Child” by Ramases (1971), “LSD-25” by The Gamblers (1960), and “Quiet Village” by Les Baxter (1951). The publication put the 1957 tune “Call For All Demons” by late jazz musician Sun Ra at the ranking’s top spot. According to the publication, “Call For All Demons” is an undoubtedly influential song within the psychedelic rock subgenre.

Sun Ra Discussed His Interesting Music in a 1971 Interview

Sun Ra, who died in 1993 at the age of 79, discussed his avant-garde music during a 1971 interview. He explained he got inspired to compose by feeling “in tune with the greater universe.”

“Feeling that the very past, present, and future, but my music actually is reaching outward, not being a part of the past or the present or the future. But rather what I call an alter-destiny because I’m dealing with equations, and like most people feel that the planet is doomed anyway,” said the composer.

During the interview, Sun Ra also revealed the message he wanted to come across in his music.

“There is a message in all of my music. It’s all about people doing something else other than what they have done. Because what they have done is the possible, and the world the way it is today is a result of the possible that they did. It’s a result of the absolute thing, so now that’s something else. There’s always something else in the universe as big as this,” said Sun Ra.
