1964 Ultra Classic Was a No. 1 Hit 62 Years Ago Today

7 April 20262 Mins Read

Sixty-two years ago today, the global rock and roll phenomenon the Beatles topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their iconic song, “Can’t Buy Me Love.”

Released in March 1964 as a single and later featured on their third studio album, A Hard Day’s Night, “Can’t Buy Me Love” became an immediate smash hit. Before its U.S. release, the track saw over 2 million advance copies sold, attesting to the group’s insurmountable influence and breaking a record for the highest advance sales at the time.

Once released in the U.S., the track climbed up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, holding the No. 1 spot for five consecutive weeks. “Can’t Buy Me Love” notably anchored a historic Billboard record, making the Beatles the first artists to hold all five of the chart’s top positions simultaneously. By April 11, the Beatles held 14 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, solidifying their unparalleled dominance in the music industry and further fueling the fire of Beatlemania.

Produced by George Martin and released via Parlophone and Captiol Records, “Can’t Buy Me Love” is recognizable for its bouncy 12-bar blues progression. Notably, the song starts boldly with the chorus, engaging listeners instantly with a high-energy hook.

The track deviates from the earlier Beatles formula, moving away from multi-part background harmonies to focus on Paul McCartney’s leading vocals, a stylistic choice that would define many of their later works.

Written by McCartney, “Can’t Buy Me Love” explores the idea that material items cannot purchase a person’s affection. The song conveys that true, genuine connections are more valuable that possessions, a theme that continues to resonate with modern audiences.

Even though the Beatles’ smash hit was released over six decades ago, fans still engage with the track through streaming platforms. On Spotify, the track has garnered over 206 million streams, affirming its longstanding legacy as a massively influential track in the development of 1960s rock and roll.
