1977 Hit Soft Rock Classic Was Written in 15 Minutes— On a $500 Bet

11 June 20263 Mins Read

In 1977, Cosby, Stills & Nash had their biggest hit with a song that happened by chance.

Recorded by musical trio David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, “Just a Song Before I Go” appeared on the album CSN and went to No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1977, becoming the legendary supergroup’s highest-charting hit of all time.

The hit song features a simple, acoustic melody and lyrics about saying goodbye. And not only is “Just a Song before I Go” a quick, radio-friendly listen—literally, clocking in at just 2:14 minutes long— but it was penned by Nash in record time.

In the liner notes to the 1991 CSN box set, Crosby revealed that Nash was challenged to write the song on the spot.

“Graham was at home in Hawaii, about to go off on tour,” Crosby recalled. “The guy who was going to take him to the airport said, ‘We’ve got 15 minutes, I’ll bet you can’t write a song in that amount of time.’ Well, you don’t smart off to Nash like that, he’ll do it. This is the result.”

Graham Nash confirmed he wrote the song on a bet

The songwriting challenge also came with money, according to Nash. In an interview with Music Radar, the music legend shared the full origin story for “Just a Song Before I Go.”

“I was in the Hawaiian Islands, and I had a couple of hours to waste before I had to catch a plane back to Los Angeles,” he said in the 2019 interview. “I was at the home of a friend of mine, Spider was his name, and as I got up to leave, he said, ‘You know what? You’re supposed to be a big-shot songwriter … I bet you can’t write a song before you go home.’ I said, ‘Really? You bet? How much do you bet?’ He said, ‘$500 you can’t write a song just before you leave.’”

Not only did he write the song, but he took his pal’s $500.

“I still have his $500 because it was written on a bet, really,” Nash said. “It was the biggest single hit that CSN ever had, I believe. Like my friend Joe Wall says, ‘If I’d have known it was going to be such a big hit I’d have written a better song.’”

Nash has written a long list of famous songs for CSN and others, including “Our House,” “Teach Your Children Well” and “Marrakesh Express.” He once told Rock Cellar magazine that inspiration could come from anywhere or anything.

“I’m recognizing more and more as I go along in my life just how important the muse of music is,” the CSN legend said. “No writer knows when it’s coming. It can be incredibly simple, like somebody saying, ‘You can’t write a song just before you go’ and then you write a song called ‘Just a Song Before I Go,’ or Joni (Mitchell) buying a vase from an antique store that we passed that became ‘Our House.’ You never know when it’s coming.”
