1989 Hit Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies of All Time’

23 April 20262 Mins Read

Film buffs thought Daniel Day-Lewis‘ final film role might be Phantom Thread in 2017. But the three-time Oscar winner, 68, came out of retirement recently to star in his son’s movie.

Anemone is currently streaming on Netflix, and if you’re also interested in watching the feature that earned the British performer his very first Academy Award, My Left Foot can be rented on various streamers.

The 1989 classic nabbed Oscar trophies for its two stars — Day-Lewis, of course, and Brenda Fricker, who played his disabled character’s mother. Here’s the official synopsis of the film, which holds a whopping 98% average critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes:

No one expects much from Christy Brown (Day-Lewis), a boy with cerebral palsy born into a working-class Irish family. Though Christy is a spastic quadriplegic and essentially paralyzed, a miraculous event occurs when, at the age of 5, he demonstrates control of his left foot by using chalk to scrawl a word on the floor. With the help of his steely mother (Fricker) — and no shortage of grit and determination — Christy overcomes his infirmity to become a painter, poet and author.

With such a riveting and impactful story, adapted from Brown’s 1954 memoir, it’s no wonder My Left Foot is ranked on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of 300 Best Movies of All Time. It can also be spotted on the British Film Institute’s list of Top 100 British Films of the 20th Century.

Years later, Day-Lewis would receive his second Oscar for There Will Be Blood (2007), with his third Best Lead Actor trophy arriving five years after for Lincoln (2012).

On that note, another renowned actor is set to portray Abraham Lincoln in an upcoming film. Tom Hanks will star in the live-action/stop motion animation hybrid movieLincoln in the Bardo based on the New York Times bestseller and 2017 Booker Prize-winner of the same name by George Saunders, Deadline reports.
