Before the big-budget Stephen King adaptations, a 1990s miniseries quietly brought one of his sprawling stories to life on the small screen.
A few years after the 1990 IT miniseries, starring the late Tim Curry as Pennywise, which paved the way for the eventual highest-grossing Halloween movie, another series captivated and haunted audiences.
Released in 1994, The Stand remains one of the most ambitious—and memorable—TV adaptations of a King novel.
Based on his best-selling post-apocalyptic book published in 1978, the TV event was a massive undertaking, with a $28 million budget to bring to life his longest book, which clocks in at 1,152 pages.
It tells the story of a deadly virus that wipes out most of the population, with the survivors rebuilding in a world divided by good and evil.
The four-part miniseries, featuring an ensemble cast and a lengthy runtime that allowed the story to unfold in full, is ranked among “Best Stephen King TV Shows” by TVLine, coming in at No. 4 on the list.
“The miniseries managed to capture the essence of the novel without losing its emotional core, a result of King writing the teleplay himself,” the outlet wrote.
In fact, CBR even called it the “best Stephen King Show in history,” even 32 years after its release.
Among the standout cast members was a young Molly Ringwald, who took on the role of Frannie Goldsmith—one of the story’s central figures navigating love, survival and uncertainty in a collapsing world. Jamey Sheridan starred as Randall Flagg, Gary Sinise as Stu Redman, Rob Lowe as Nick Andross, Ruby Dee as Mother Abagail and Laura San Giacomo as Nadine Cross.
There were also many memorable cameos, like Ed Harris, Jeff Goldblum, Kathy Bates and even King himself.
Boasting a 64% Rotten Tomatoes rating, fans praise it for staying closer to the book’s structure and source material, along with a stellar cast, though many criticize that the special effects and style appear very dated in the present day.
CBR, however, found that to be a strength too, writing, “Perhaps what it’s most notable for aside from its great acting and character exploration, is its incredible special effects. Creating a worldwide plague for TV isn’t easy, especially in a time when digital special effects were used sparingly and were mostly unrealistic.”
The series attracted strong ratings throughout the four-night premiere, drawing millions for its broadcast run, earning mostly positive reviews, and six Primetime Emmy Award nominations, with wins in Outstanding Makeup for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited Series or a special.
Another remake came years later, in 2020, but the ‘90s version is widely regarded by fans and critics as the definitive and superior one.
Decades later, the miniseries serves as a reminder of what made King’s stories so compelling in the first place—and why they continue to resonate across generations.
