’70s Rock Icon Who Died in 2017 Getting New Documentary ‘Music of My Soul’

26 February 20262 Mins Read

A new documentary exploring the life and legacy of Gregg Allman is officially headed to U.S. audiences, Variety reports.

Music of My Soul, a critically praised film chronicling the legendary Allman Brothers Band frontman and solo artist, has been acquired for North America by independent production and distribution company Subtext. The film is expected to be released this summer.

Allman, who died in 2017 at age 69 due to complications from liver cancer, remains one of the defining voices of Southern rock. The documentary offers a deeply personal portrait of the musician, drawing from previously uncirculated interviews and rare concert footage.

According to the announcement, the film “weaves an intimate portrait of Allman, candidly reflecting on the death of his brother and bandmate Duane, his battles with addiction, and the personal demons that shaped both his life and his music.”

Directed by Grammy- and Golden Globe-winning filmmaker James Keach—whose credits include the Johnny Cashbiopic Walk the Line and acclaimed music documentaries on Glen Campbell, David Crosby and Linda Ronstadt—the project brings significant pedigree behind the camera.

Producer Michael Lehman, who served as Allman’s longtime manager, called the film “profoundly meaningful,” adding, “Gregg’s music has outlived him and will bring joy to many generations in the future.”

The film also highlights the Allman Brothers Band’s rejection of racial divisions in the American South, emphasizing the group’s deep respect for Black musical traditions and collaborations at a time when integrated rock groups were rare.

Made in association with Rolling Stone Films, the documentary aims to capture what director Keach described as Allman’s “humanity,” including his close bond with his late brother Duane and his struggles with addiction.

“His soulful voice and brilliant songs reflect a life of redemption and hopefully will inspire all who witness his journey,” Keach said.

Subtext plans to release Music of My Soul this summer. An exact premiere date has not yet been announced.
