’90s/2000s Punk Rock Icon Tells Near-Death Plane Crash Story in New Film

22 May 20262 Mins Read

In June 1998, the world was introduced to the rocker who would become punk’s first superstar drummer. Coined by Rolling Stone, the moniker, of course, is referring to Blink-182‘s Travis Barker. But his rise to the top came with unimaginable trauma. It’s a story he’s finally telling in a new documentary film calledTravis Barker: Lounder Than Fear.

“This documentary started over 10 years ago,” Barker revealed to Billboard, “and it’s been a wild, wild ride and I can’t wait to share it with the world.”

Renowned for his versatility, high energy, technical prowess, and that signature ink, the musician also has an incredible survival story to tell. In 2008, Barker and Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein lived through a plane crash that killed the pilot and three others, per People. The traumatic experience forced him on a journey from catastrophe to comeback.

Directed by Michael Dwyer and Justin Krook, the 90-minute documentary film pulls back the curtain on “the spectacle of fame” to reveal “a complex man battling pain, grief and the thin line between survival and surrender.” Making its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival next month (tickets here), the film will hit Disney+ a month later on August 13.

Originally the drummer for The Aquabats, Barker got the opportunity of a lifetime when Blink-182 drummer Scott Raynor departed mid-tour and Barker was asked to fill in. According to iHeart, the electrifying musician learned the band’s entire 20-song set in less than an hour and was later asked to stay on the kit full-time. Obviously, he did.

With Barker, Blink-182 became the defining voice of a generation — their hits penetrating the airwaves nonstop in the late ’90s and early 2000s. From “What’s My Age Again?” and “I Miss You” to “All the Small Things” and their anthemic “Dammit,” the band’s commercial success speaks for itself: a combined 15.3 million copies sold and 5 billion on-demand streams, per Billboard. They’ve also topped the Billboard 200 and scored eight hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

Now, with Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear, Barker may be adding another milestone to an already legendary career.
