Report Finds Honolulu Hotels Generate $12 Billion in Annual Economic Activity

A report produced by Oxford Economics and released by the American Hotel & Lodging Association and the Hawai’i Hotel Alliance provides data on the economic impact of the hotel industry in Honolulu. The report states that hotel operations and visitor spending in Honolulu generate $12 billion in annual economic activity and support 63,912 jobs.

The study details that hotel operations directly employ 18,088 people, with annual wages totaling $1.4 billion. The industry generates $830.9 million in federal tax revenue, $722.2 million in state tax revenue, and $329.9 million in local tax revenue annually.

Honolulu has 29,112 hotel guest rooms across 93 hotel properties, with nearly 8.6 million hotel room nights sold annually. Hotel guests spend $6.5 billion each year throughout Honolulu, equivalent to $760 per room night on lodging, retail, dining, and other activities.

Visitor spending in Honolulu supports a range of industries, including restaurants, retail, and arts and entertainment. Taxes generated from hotel operations and guest visits fund public services, including schools, infrastructure, and first responders.
