This ’80s TV Show Is Ranked 'Best Sitcom of All Time'

17 March 20262 Mins Read

The Simpsons has owned Sunday nights at 8:00 PM on Fox for decades. Now it officially owns something bigger — the title of Best Sitcom of All Time. And if you grew up watching the show, you always knew this was coming. The rest of the world has simply caught up.

Recently, Collider ranked the sixty greatest sitcoms of all time. Of the many beloved television shows, titles such as 3rd Rock from the Sun, BrooklynNine-Nine, Friends, and Maude all made it to the list, with M*A*S*H and I Love Lucy rounding out the top 3 – but The Simpsons claimed #1.

The Simpsons

2022 by 20th Television

Nearly four decades after hitting the small screens, it’s the longest-running scripted primetime series in TV history, fresh off its 800th episode in Season 37.

The series first aired on TV in April 1987 as an animated show on The Tracy Ullman Show. Shortly after, it was picked by Fox as a standalone in December 1989.

Created by Matt Groening and set in the fictional town of Springfield, it follows the dysfunctional Simpson family: beer-loving dad Homer, homemaker Marge, underachiever Bart (10), genius Lisa (8), and pacifier-sucking baby Maggie. Pets Santa’s Little Helper (dog) and Snowball II (cat) add to the chaos.

As the show’s popularity soared, it became a loved destination for celebrity cameos. Michael Jackson, Dustin Hoffman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Lisa Kudrow, Meryl Streep, and Patrick Stewart are just a few names in an inexhaustible list of celebrities who lent their voices over the years.

True, the show had its lows across certain seasons, but in the ’90s it undisputably ruled television. Thirty-seven Emmy Awards and eight People’s Choice Awards later, its legacy speaks for itself.

The Simpsons’ first 36 Seasons can be streamed on Disney+ on demand.
