Zendaya Calls This No.1 Chart-Topping 1995 Track the Best Wedding Dance Floor Song

One of the most important aspects of any wedding is a good DJ and playlist to get the party started. Actor Zendaya revealed one R&B classic that gets her on the dance floor at any wedding, no matter what, and was a No. 1 hit track in 1995.

With Zendaya and Tom Holland‘s possible nuptial rumors circulating online, and her newest film, The Drama, alongside Robert Pattinson, the actor dives headfirst into wedding content. She told People that one Montell Jordan song is “guaranteed” to be a wedding dance floor success.

“I always say that ‘This Is How We Do It’ [by Montell Jordan] always gets people going,” Zendaya revealed. “As soon as everybody hears [it], everybody’s up. It works every time.”

The actor’s pick just so happens to be an R&B favorite with Jordan having released the lead single as part of his debut album of the same name in the mid ’90s. “This Is How We Do It” was also Def Jam Recordings’ first R&B release for the record label and ultimately became Jordan’s signature song.

According to reports on the song’s creation, it was inspired by the party culture in South Central Los Angeles at the time. Some fans may find the track’s beat familiar, seeing as it features an enhanced Teddy Riley drum pattern sampling Slick Rick’s 1989 song “Children’s Story.” Critics called the track an “unavoidable” hit thanks to its seamless blend of infectious beats, catchy vocals, and sharp, confident rapping that helped it dominate the airwaves.

“This Is How We Do It” ended up reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts a month after its release, and overtook Madonna‘s “Take a Bow.” The song retained its ranking for seven straight weeks and entered the R&B singles chart. It became certified Platinum and led Jordan to be nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards. Besides the single, its accompanying music video also got recognition and was nominated for Dance Video and Best R&B Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The track very well may be on every couple’s wedding playlist, with Zendaya saying music is what leads to a successful wedding, “Because, I don’t know, it’s like dance is a universal language and people need music to set the vibe, to get the vibes going, get the party started. So good music.”
