A free cherry blossom festival will bloom in Metro Vancouver for one day only this April

23 March 20263 Mins Read

Vancouver’s iconic Cherry Blossom Festival returns this week, but another is blooming in Richmond this April that will be equally vibrant and fun for all ages! The annual Richmond Cherry Blossom Festival will soon be back at Garry Point Park for one day only, bringing the community together as the blossoms reach their peak.

“This year’s theme is ありがとう (Arigatō), or “thank you,” say organizers. “It reflects gratitude for community, for cultural connection and for the beauty of coming together in spring.”

History of the festival

According to its website, the Richmond Cherry Blossom Fest was established in 2017 to shine a light on the stunning 255 Akebono cherry trees growing at Garry Point Park, which were donated to the City by the BC Wakayama Kenjin Kai, the Wakayama Prefectural Association. The group supports the rich heritage and legacy of Japanese families that immigrated to Steveston from the Wakayama Prefecture in Japan.

The donation of these cherry trees was part of a 10-year beautification project to celebrate the millennium and the 35th anniversary of the Wakayama Kenjin Kai, with the original grove planted in 2000 next to Kuno Garden.

The garden was named after Gihei Kuno, now known as the “father of immigration” in the area. In 1888, he became the first Japanese immigrant from the Wakayama Prefecture.

What to expect

Taking place from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the festival celebrates the beauty of the blossoms and the cultural richness of Japan.

Visitors can check out displays and cultural demos by local artisans at the Hanami Tent, including calligraphy, bonsai and origami, as well as the opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony.

Head to the Sakura Tent for a live Ikebana demonstration, performances by Taiko drummers, and folk singers and dancers.

Finally, children of all ages can learn how to fold origami blooms at the Chibi-Chan Tent.

There is also the opportunity to enjoy a range of Japanese menu items from an array of local vendors.

Mark your calendars, cherry blossom lovers!

When: Sunday, April 12, 2026
Time: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Garry Point Park, Richmond
Cost: Free admission
