This dreamy riverside retreat near Calgary looks straight out of a movie

9 April 20263 Mins Read

Consider this your reminder that you don’t need a plane ticket to escape the city. Located just an hour outside Calgary in Cochrane, The Crossing at Ghost River feels like you’re stepping into a completely different world. Think 145 acres of forest, river views, cozy cabins, and a rare kind of quiet that you don’t typically find in the city.

About the venue

The Crossing isn’t just a place to stay, it’s a place to slow down. With 27 guest rooms ranging from cozy to more premium, each space offers forest views and a private ensuite bathroom. Some rooms also include balconies and pet-friendly options so that you can bring your furry friend along for the trip.

One of the most unique parts of staying here is what you will not find in the rooms. There are no TVs or phones, which encourages you to unplug and slow down fully.

Dinner is also a major highlight. The on-site culinary team creates seasonal, locally sourced menus that are elevated yet feel comforting. Guests can enjoy meals in the antique-style dining room, relax on the outdoor patio, or grab a drink at its modern cowboy-inspired bar.

Beyond the inn itself, there is no shortage of things to do. The 145-acre property is made for exploring, whether you want to take a peaceful walk through the forest or listen to the peaceful flows of the Ghost River. In the summer, there are some amazing opportunities for swimming, outdoor games, and riverside relaxation.

There are also plenty of cozy moments built into the stay. You can catch a movie in the lounge, enjoy the outdoor fire pit, or look up at the stars. With minimal light pollution, stargazing here feels unreal on clear nights.

And just a short drive from The Crossing, Cochrane offers even more to explore. From the Yamnuska Wolf Dog Sanctuary and Saddle Peak horseback riding to Early Dawn Farm and Historic Cochrane Ranche, there are plenty of nearby experiences to turn your getaway into a full adventure.

So if you’ve been needing a little reset, this might be your sign. The Crossing at Ghost River is close to the city, but feels like a breath of fresh air the moment you arrive. A quiet escape like this is exactly what a weekend was made for.

When: Open Monday through Sunday
Time: Open for bookings
Where: 62129 AB-40, Cochrane, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $285
