‘The Eternaut’ Season 2 Gets Disappointing Release Date Update

If you’re waiting for Juan Salvo to return to your screens, you might need to bundle up and get comfortable—it looks like we’re in for a very long winter.

In the past couple of dates, Netflix unveiled an absolutely massive slate of upcoming Argentinian movies, series, and documentaries for 2026 and 2027. The announcement coincided with the streamer opening a new regional headquarters in the Villa Crespo neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

While the new slate is undeniably exciting—boasting heavy hitters like Pablo Larraín’s My Sad Dead and Juan José Campanella’s animated Mafalda series—eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed one glaring omission from the official 2026–2027 roster: Season 2 of The Eternaut.

For those who missed the news, the series picked up a season 2 renewal back in early May last year, following its big splashy debut. The show featured in the global top 10 charts for 5 weeks, picking up 147.4 million viewing hours and 27.3 million completed views. That’s in addition to appearing in the weekly charts in 88 countries. By the end of 2025, the series had amassed 32.7M views.

Given that the epic post-apocalyptic adaptation starring Ricardo Darín is arguably the biggest TV show ever to come out of Argentina (certainly for Netflix, but easily the biggest beyond), its absence from the two-year slate set off alarm bells.

Fortunately, we’re not completely in the cold and do now have an update on where the sci-fi hit stands. The bad news? We are going to be waiting quite a while.

Why is The Eternaut Season 2 Taking So Long?

Speaking to trade outlet Deadline, Francisco Ramos, Netflix’s Vice President of Content for Latin America, confirmed that Season 2 is currently in “advanced development.” However, in a practical sense, that means cameras are not yet rolling.

So, why the massive delay for a show that was already renewed? According to Ramos, the second season is expanding massively in budget, scope, and conception.

“The ambition has gone to a new level,” Ramos told Deadline. “Stuff is already happening, but it’s not actually with actors on screen, it’s technical with some VFX conceptualization. The actual shoot with the talent on screen, we don’t know [the dates] yet because it’s way bigger than Season 1…”

Ramos also noted that the way Season 1 ended means the Bruno Stagnaro-directed series needs to step up its game to faithfully continue Héctor G. Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López’s iconic graphic novel.

Will there be a Season 3 of The Eternaut?

There is a silver lining to this disappointing production update: the delay is partly due to the creative team mapping out a potential Season 3.

As we reported last year, series producer Matías Mosteirin from K&S Productions originally noted a tentative plan to wrap up the story in two seasons. Now, it seems the unprecedented success of the show has shifted that timeline.

“We need to figure out how we deliver on everything that is expected to be delivered in Season 2, while yet being able to continue with it for a potential Season 3,” Ramos explained.

When will The Eternaut Season 2 be on Netflix?

This is where the news gets particularly tough for fans. Because the show requires such heavy visual effects and the cast hasn’t even begun filming yet, an imminent release is completely off the table.

When Deadline asked Ramos if a 2027 launch date was possible, his answer was notably cautious: “I’m gonna try, for sure, to be on stream next year [2027], but I cannot promise anything.”

Given Ramos’s hesitation, the massive VFX workload ahead, and the fact that Netflix deliberately left The Eternaut off its official 2026–2027 Argentinian slate, fans should brace themselves. While a late 2027 release is the hope, we realistically might not see Juan Salvo’s desperate struggle for survival continue until 2028.
