This peaceful lake near Calgary fills up with swans during the spring

14 April 20263 Mins Read

If you’re looking for a low-key spring escape near Calgary, this is one of those spots that feels like a bit of a hidden gem.

Just outside High River, Frank Lake is a protected wetland that fills with swans as they pass through on their northward migration every spring.

It’s not a “lake day” in the usual sense. There are no beaches or busy lookouts, just open space, still water, and more birds than you probably would expect.

About Frank Lake

Frank Lake is a wetland located about 50 km southeast of Calgary that quietly plays a big role for birds in Alberta. It is recognized as one of Canada’s Important Bird Areas and is home to more than 190 species year-round.

Spring is when it gets especially active. Tundra and trumpeter swans pass through during migration, sometimes in large groups, stopping here to rest, feed and gain energy before continuing on their long journey north to the Canadian Arctic.

In the summer months, the islands attract larger birds like American White Pelicans and Double-crested Cormorants, while the shoreline is active with shorebirds like Avocets and stilts.

What makes it even more interesting is that this wetland was once completely dry. Thanks to ongoing conservation efforts from groups like Ducks Unlimited and other partners, it has been restored as a thriving habitat for birds again.

One of the best things about visiting Frank Lake is how simple it is to experience. There is a boardwalk and walking area that stretches roughly 4 kilometres each way, making it a great option for a quiet, relaxed stroll.

Along the route, you will also find plenty of lookout points where you can view the birds without getting too close, so you don’t disturb them.

There are also plenty of informational signs throughout the walk, making it easy to learn about wildlife along the way.

Frank Lake might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of day trips near Calgary, but that’s what makes it so special. It is calm, it is simple, and during the spring, it just happens to be filled with swans.

If you’re in the mood for a quiet reset or want to switch things up from your usual plans, this is an easy one to add to your list.
