Victoria Beckham recently talked to The Wall Street Journal’s WSJ Magazine, sharing her views on parenting and raising children in the spotlight. And of course, fans are eager to know if the former Spice Girl is ready to reveal info on the reported rift between herself (and soccer star hubby David Beckham) and eldest son Brooklyn Peltz Beckham.
So what exactly did Beckham have to say about the estrangement? If you’re looking for a solid answer, the singer/fashion designer/entrepreneur failed to provide fans with details. The mom of four didn’t specifically mention Brooklyn by name. Instead, she opened up, giving her candid take on parenting a famous family.
The 51-year-old (she’ll turn 52 on April 17) shared, “I think that we’ve always—we love our children so much.” Beckham continued, “We’ve always tried to be the best parents that we can be. And you know, we’ve been in the public eye for more than 30 years right now, and all we’ve tried to do is protect our children and love our children. And you know, that’s really all I want to say about it.”
While she didn’t refer to Brooklyn as she spoke, Beckham’s musings on motherhood and celeb parenting have gotten plenty of attention in light of the family’s very public issues. In January, Brooklyn spoke out against his parents, accusing David and Victoria of trying to control him and disrespecting his wife.
Peltz Beckham posted (on his Instagram Stories) a series of statements, beginning with, “I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private. Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press.” He added that he had “no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about some of the lies that have been printed.” On the matter of working things out, Brooklyn wrote, “I do not want to reconcile with my family.”
Brooklyn also accused his parents of controlling the narrative about their family in the press and creating “performative” social media posts that portrayed “inauthentic relationships.” His statement also included the Beckham’s’ involvement in his relationship with wife Nicola Peltz, “My parents have been trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding, and it hasn’t stopped.” And neither did his statement.
Brooklyn continued, addressing headline-making (and the mother of all mother-in-law) rumors about Victoria’s role in creating Peltz’s wedding gown, “My mum canceled making Nicola’s dress in the eleventh hour despite how excited she was to wear her design, forcing her to urgently find a new dress.”
As Brooklyn wove his way through the complicated relationship he shares with his family, the oldest of the Beckham children explained that his parents allegedly bribed him to sign over the rights to his name, pushed his siblings to attack him on social media, and even went as far as hijacking his first dance with his wife.
Peltz Beckham concluded his message by writing, “My wife and I do not want a life shaped by image, press, or manipulation. All we want peace, privacy, and happiness for us and our future family.”
