Grab your tissues and get ready to say goodbye. Netflix has officially announced that the highly anticipated finale film, Heartstopper Forever, will arrive globally on July 17th, 2026.
The release date announcement arrives exactly four years to the day since the first season of the beloved coming-of-age drama dropped on Netflix in 2022. To celebrate the news, Netflix dropped a brand-new social asset featuring the cast growing up together throughout the seasons, culminating in the July 17th release date and a brand-new behind-the-scenes image of the cast reunited on set for the final time.
As we’ve been covering here at What’s on Netflix, it’s been a busy few months for the Heartstopper crew. We tracked the film from when production officially kicked off, all the way to the wrap of filming, which is when the Heartstopper Forever title was officially confirmed.
More recently, we also got word on some massive additions (and returns) to the cast list. Joining the established Osemanverse crew for the finale movie are British acting heavyweights Anna Maxwell Martin and Derek Jacobi, alongside the return of Olivia Colman as Nick’s mother, Sarah.
So, what can we expect from the concluding chapter of Nick and Charlie’s story? Netflix provided us with the official synopsis for the finale film:
“Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”
Alice Oseman Talks the Shift from Season to Movie
Alongside the date announcement, Netflix released a new Q&A with creator Alice Oseman, who addressed a major question on fans’ minds: why conclude the story with a movie instead of a traditional fourth season?
“I totally understand if fans are a little apprehensive. It’s a big change from what we know,” Oseman shared. “But once I began to see the entire vision, I knew it would be something even more beautiful than a regular season could achieve. We are feeling very ambitious about what is possible in a movie format. With no need for end-of-episode cliffhangers or a new twist every episode, every part of Heartstopper can be elevated to a higher quality to create something memorable, sophisticated, and atmospheric.”
Oseman also dug into the emotional core of the finale, which will be heavily based on the upcoming sixth and final volume of the graphic novel series. With Nick heading off to university, the reality of a long-distance relationship becomes a massive hurdle.
“At 18 and 17, Nick and Charlie are hurtling towards their adult lives. Many teenage relationships don’t survive that pivotal moment of change,” Oseman explained. “Are Nick and Charlie a forever love? If they are, why? I want the movie to capture this transitional moment for them as a couple — from teens to adults, from teen romance to forever love, from past to future.”
According to the creator, the movie will explore Charlie “finding a new sense of confidence and independence, and healing from some of his old demons,” while Nick is facing “a bit of a crisis about his future” and isn’t quite sure who he is without Charlie by his side.

Behind the camera, there are a few notable shifts for the finale. While Oseman naturally returns as creator and writer, directing duties for the film have been handed over to Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, Colette).
Fans will also be thrilled to spot that series leads Kit Connor and Joe Locke have been bumped up to Executive Producers for the movie, sharing the title with Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Alice Oseman, and veteran Heartstopper director Euros Lyn. See-Saw Films once again serves as the production company.
Rounding out the core cast returning for the finale are William Gao (Tao), Yasmin Finney (Elle), Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), Tobie Donovan (Isaac), Jenny Walser (Tori), Rhea Norwood (Imogen), and Leila Khan (Sahar).
