Every projector on the market seems to promise “cinematic magic” but often delivers a slightly fuzzy, dimly lit, unmemorable experience. When I set up the Epson Lifestudio Flex Plus, I kept my expectations low but my hopes high. Very quickly, I realized this wasn’t just a distraction for my toddler on the weekend, but something my whole family could wholeheartedly enjoy — it was a genuinely immersive entertainment upgrade that made any room in my house feel like a private movie theatre.

Unboxing and setting up

The projector is lightweight and arrived in one small box, ready to go. Simply plug in and sign into your favourite streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV or Crave. No need for a screen, all that’s required is a blank wall.

How’s the picture and sound quality?

The picture and sound quality shocked me (in the best way). The standout feature is the 4K PRO‑UHD picture, which is much sharper than I expected from a projector this compact and portable. Colours look rich, motion stays smooth (other projectors I’ve used felt like motion was delayed), and the image is strong even when light is filtering into the room.

Projector sound is usually pretty average, but thanks to the collaboration with Bose, the sound quality is strong, full and crisp. Dialogue is sharp and music has the depth you’d expect from a quality soundbar. You could definitely hook up external speakers for a surround-sound experience, but I haven’t felt like I’ve needed to.

The Flex Plus can project up to 150 inches, and even at its largest projection, the image stays sharp and turns my blank wall into a cinema. I’m looking forward to trying the projector outdoors with the warmer weather to see how it holds up (stay tuned).

How does it compare to similarly priced projectors?

The Flex Plus fall in the mid-range of portable projectors, competing with models like the Samsung Freestyle, XGIMI Horizon, and BenQ GV30. I haven’t had an opportunity to test these models, but the internet doesn’t lie. The Epson stands out for picture (reviewers say it’s “noticeably crisper”), sound (more cinematic audio), size of image (150” of quality) and flexibility (fully adjustable stand).

• Picture: The image quality for a portable projector continues to impress me — crisp detail, rich colour and strong contrast, even without a fully dark room.
• Sound: Most projectors have thin, hollow audio, but the Bose tuning gives this one warmth, clarity and enough oomph without needing to add external speakers.
• 150″ display: It can scale up to a truly cinematic size while staying sharp,  which is something many similarly priced projectors struggle with.
• Adjustable stand: This is a standout feature. Instead of stacking books awkwardly, you can angle it toward almost any flat surface — walls, ceilings, doors or even a blanket.
• Portable and easy to set up: It’s designed for movie nights wherever you find yourself. The quick setup allows for easy movement from the living room to the backyard to the bedroom.

Cons

• Not as bright as a dedicated home‑theatre projector: While the picture is strong, it still performs best in dim or dark environments. Bright daylight can wash out the image.
• Expensive: You’re paying for the Bose audio, 4K PRO‑UHD and sleek design. Some competitors offer lower prices, with noticeable trade‑offs in sound or picture quality.
• No built‑in lens cover: A small detail, but an important one. Be mindful of dust or scratches when moving it around.
• Limited zoom compared to larger home‑theatre projectors: You’ll need to physically move the projector to adjust screen size, which is normal for a portable projector (but worth noting).
