Shonen Jump’s most popular new manga Kagurabachi finally gets anime adaptation

27 April 20263 Mins Read

Vengeance is forged in steel and patience, as Kagurabachi fans are well aware of. Finally, the anime adaptation of Takeru Hokazono’s hit manga published in Weekly Shonen Jump has been announced, and it’s slated for arrival in April 2027. A short teaser trailer for the series premiered during Shonen Jump’s Jump Press event on Monday morning, which also highlighted a slew of other major reveals planned for its various manga properties.

The Kagurabachi anime teaser showed off some slick and gritty animation work, mostly keeping the protagonist, Chihiro Rokuhira, in the spotlight. The anime is produced by Cypic studios, best known for Umamusume: Pretty Derby and The Summer Hikaru Died, and is directed by Tetsuya Takeuchi. He is arguably one of the most skilled action animation directors in the industry, with credits spanning Naruto, Lycoris Recoil, Sword Art Online, Heavenly Delusion, and plenty more. That bodes well for fans excitedly anticipating its sword-clashing duels and intense sorcery clashes.

Takeuchi relayed his enthusiasm for the project in pre-translated messages shared during the live stream: “When you think of Kagurabachi, you think of katana! And more katana! Plus cool characters and intense drama! I’ll work hard to capture all those elements and aim to make a show that both long-time fans of the manga and first-time viewers alike can enjoy!”

The Kagurabachi anime has also tapped Keigo Sasaki to serve as the anime’s character designer. Known for his work on a variety of anime, including Erased, Blue Exorcist, The Seven Deadly Sins, and plenty more, Sasaki brings a sharp eye for expressive, high-impact character work — something that should translate especially well in the midst of Kagurabachi’s quiet grief and explosive swordplay.

If you thought the announcement was enough, think again. A Kagurabachi world tour is coming this summer, which will be screening the first 20 minutes of episode 1 to lucky attendees at “anime events around the world.” The world tour is set to culminate in Japan “with the world’s first premiere of the uncut version of episode 1,” which should keep the bubbling excitement going strong for the next year until the anime’s official release.

Hokazono has also crafted a beautiful commemorative illustration to celebrate the announcement, which you can see below.

Takeru Hokazono’s Kagurabachi, which first debuted in 2023, has since drawn immense anticipation for an official anime, especially from Western fans who have made this manga an internet sensation. It seems their prayers have finally been answered, and the anime adaptation already looks to be a faithful rendition with incredible names attached. The latest volume of the manga, volume 11, is also set to drop on May 1 exclusively in Japan.

Kagurabchi premieres globally in April 2027.
