The coolest events worth travelling for this summer
Iceland Eclipse Festival, Iceland
⭐ Best for: raver astrophiles
Thanks to Artemis II’s venture becoming the talk of the internet, outer space is one hot topic right now. That mission has come to an end, but there’s plenty more celestial stuff happening in 2026, including a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse. If you head to Iceland, you’ll have the pleasure not only of glimpsing the phenomenon, but also of enjoying a unique festival shaped around the eclipse while you’re at it. The aptly named Iceland Eclipse Festival will feature a programme of art, music, science and tech, and is taking place in the country’s glorious Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

La Caverne du Pont Neuf, France
⭐ Best for: closeted geology nerds
Okay, okay, it’s not hard to vouch for a visit to Paris at pretty much any time of year, but June 2026 will still be a better month than most. Why? Well, because of this eye-catching art installation on the city’s oldest bridge. La Caverne du Pont Neuf by artist JR will see the structure transformed into a cavernous piece of art, which nods to the origins of the stone the bridge is built with. The coolest part? It’s completely free to visit. Make sure it’s at the top of your Paris to-do list.

Frida: The Making of an Icon, UK
⭐ Best for: Frida maniacs, duh
The UK capital has one of the best exhibition calendars on the planet, but it’s hard to top a retrospective dedicated to the mother of modern art, and that’s precisely what is opening in London this summer. Frida: The Making of an Icon will be the Tate Modern’s blockbuster show this year, and it’s set to include more than 130 works, including 30 of Kahlo’s most poignant, as well as a selection by her contemporaries. Photos, documents, and memorabilia will also feature, and the whole collection is set to shine a light on how this artist has morphed into nothing short of a cultural phenomenon.

FIFA Men’s World Cup, Canada, Mexico and the USA
⭐ Best for: wannabe sports trippers
Whether you’re a football fan or not, the 23rd FIFA Men’s World Cup will undoubtedly be a feature of your summer in some shape or form. But, given there are few things more infectious than the palpable excitement of a live sporting event, we’d argue you might as well embrace it, and luckily, the mega tournament is taking place not just across the US, but across Mexico and Canada, too. From the leafy surroundings of Vancouver to the dense, colourful streets of Mexico City, the list of hubs hosting matches is long and varied, so the options for your match-watching backdrop are aplenty.

A State of Trance, Vietnam and Hong Kong
⭐ Best for: losing yourself
Trancers, listen up – legendary electronic music brand A State of Trance is marking its 25th anniversary by landing in Hong Kong and Vietnam this summer – a milestone event for fans of their euphoric melodies, impressive line-ups and mega productions. It kicks off at AsiaWorld-Expo’s Hall 3 before heading to Ho Chi Minh City the following day – its first-ever proper festival stop in Vietnam – so be ready for an impressive roster of DJs and some hands-in-the-air hits.

Detour Discotheque, Italy
⭐ Best for: carb-loading and cutting shapes
The only thing better than a disco is a travelling one, right? Luckily for us, Detour Discotheque, the brilliant annual party which has thus far taken place in the remote hills of Scotland, the windswept lands of Iceland, the literal top of a mountain in Switzerland and a rustic Italian farmhouse, is back for its fifth installment later this summer. Now set to land in a convent – yes, a convent – which is also a Unesco World Heritage Site, the dancing (of which there will be plenty) will be accompanied by cooking classes, pool sessions and discussions on the origin of disco.

Reopening of MAM Sao Paulo, Brazil
⭐ Best for: culture vultures
After months of renovation on the marquee at the institution’s Ibirapuera Park location, the Museum of Modern Art Sao Paulo is finally set to reopen in July. While exhibitions have still been held at partner locations, this is the first time visitors will be welcomed to the headquarters since August 2024, and to mark the occasion, the 39th Panorama of Brazilian Art: After It’s All Said will be the opening exhibition in September. Based on a question asked by Black feminist thinker Denise Ferreira da Silva, the show will explore what happens to art when discussions about racial violence and trauma have already been had, and it’s set to be one hell of a hard launch for the museum’s new era.

Summer Night’s Dinner in Oulu, Finland
⭐ Best for: if you’re feeling peckish
You don’t need us to tell you that sampling local food is a must when you’re visiting a new place, but head to Oulu, one of the two European Capitals of Culture for 2026, and you’ll be invited to tuck in at a unique dinner party. On August 15, the Finnish city’s residents will be rocking up to a 1km-long table (yes, you read that right) with homemade dishes, and feeding neighbours and visitors alike in one massive communal meal. A special tablecloth has been designed for the occasion, and 140 different companies from the surrounding region are getting involved in the catering and hosting.

The inauguration of DATALAND, USA
⭐ Best for: Open-minded gallery hoppers
DATALAND, an AI art museum in Los Angeles, is finally set to welcome visitors from June 20, 2026. Its collections are set to be worlds away from the intricate brush strokes of Monet or the monumental sculptures of Anish Kapoor, but hey, that’s precisely the point. Instead, it’s been built ‘utilising the most advanced technologies available and redefining artistic expression in the age of machine intelligence’.
