Can You Name This Iconic 1971 Rock Drum Intro in 2 Seconds? American Songwriter Thinks You Can

20 May 20263 Mins Read

There are few ways to grab classic rock fans’ attention and make a song instantly recognizable faster than a powerhouse drum intro. According to American Songwriter, only a handful of classic rock drum intros are recognizable within seconds, cementing both the song and the drummer’s iconic status.

“Rock and Roll” by Led Zeppelin is a standout among American Songwriter’s picks for unforgettable classic rock drum intros. Can you recognize John Bonham’s explosive, raw drumming on the legendary Zeppelin track?

Why “Rock and Roll” Has One of Rock’s Most Recognizable Drum Intros

The song’s unique timing continues to be discussed, studied, and replayed by generations of music enthusiasts.

“That insane count-in fill from John Bonham should be studied by every kid who gets a drum kit for Christmas,” writes American Songwriter’s Em Casalena. “It’s an immediate vibe establisher, one that forms one of the most explosive and memorable drum intros of all time. “Rock and Roll” was a modest hit for Led Zeppelin in 1972, peaking at No. 47 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.”

Casalena also cites “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins and “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf, both made famous in part by instantly recognizable drum intros that have remained timeless.

Part of what makes Bonham’s “Rock and Roll” intro so enduring is its immediacy. Before a single lyric is sung, the legendary drummer establishes the song’s swagger and energy. Bonham creates a chaotic sound that somehow remains completely controlled.

John Bonham’s Drum Style Still Influences Rock Music Today

Many rock fans and music critics consider Bonham’s performance the definitive classic rock drum intro, one that continues to influence modern rock music decades later. Younger fans are still discovering “Rock and Roll” through streaming playlists, social media clips, movies, and classic rock radio.

Likewise, some of rock music’s most celebrated drummers, including Dave Grohl, Chad Smith, and Lars Ulrich, have all drawn inspiration from Bonham’s aggressive, hard-hitting style that helped define rock music.

More than 50 years after its release, “Rock and Roll” remains proof that sometimes it takes only a few seconds of drums to create one of the most unforgettable intros in rock music history.
