The Mandalorian and Grogu’s opening weekend box office is tracking slightly behind 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story
We learned how Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu performed at the domestic box office this weekend, and the results were underwhelming for the first Star Wars movie to come to theaters since 2019.
Per Variety’s reporting, The Mandalorian and Grogu’s three-day gross currently stands at $82 million. Once you factor in Memorial Day, the movie is estimated to make around $102 million over its opening weekend in the United States. While it outperformed The Devil Wears Prada 2’s opening weekend, it will need that extra Memorial Day revenue to surpass Michael‘s opening-weekend gross. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie still holds the top spot for the biggest opening weekend of the year.
Although The Mandalorian and Grogu’s opening weekend was decent for 2026 box-office standards, it’s considered a disappointment when compared to other modern Star Wars films. Solo: A Star Wars Story was the previous low point for Disney’s Star Wars theatrical releases, with a $103 opening in 2018. The Mandalorian and Grogu, which similarly came to theaters on Memorial Day weekend, is tracking slightly behind it.
Analysts speaking to Variety believe The Mandalorian and Grogu won’t be as much of a financial disappointment for Disney as Solo was because the new movie was made on a smaller budget. Still, this muted box office performance feeds the narrative that The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn’t quite live up to expectations for a marquee Star Wars movie released in theaters/
The bigger box-office success story of the weekend is Obsession, Focus Features’ new indie horror flick made on a budget of less than $1 million. This four-day weekend, Variety estimates it will make around $28.2 million. Obsession follows Iron Lung’s success in proving that there’s theatrical interest in low-budget horror movies and that you don’t necessarily need to be attached to an IP as big as Star Wars to be a hit.
Star Wars will have another chance to do better at the box office next year, as Star Wars: Starfighter is slated for a May 28, 2027 release.
