There is a historic ranch in southern Alberta that brings the Old West to life

26 May 20263 Mins Read

Ever wonder what it feels like to step back into the Wild West? Located just over an hour south of Calgary, Bar U Ranch National Historic Site is a hidden ranch filled with history and stories from Alberta’s ranching past and the people who helped shape it.

The best part about the ranch is that you can visit it for yourself. The site still holds original buildings, corrals, and open land that give you a sense of what ranch life looked like in the 1800s and early 1900s.

Where ranching history comes to life

Bar U Ranch National Historic Site is not your typical walk-through museum; according to Parks Canada, it was once one of the most important large corporate ranches in Canada, and you can still see all of its history woven into the land today.

Now, instead of a working ranch, it is preserved as a historic site where you can take guided tours, try hands-on experiences, and explore at your own pace.

As you wander the site, you’ll encounter working areas, original structures, and restored ranch buildings that once supported a massive cattle and horse operation.

One of the first stops worth visiting is the historic cookhouse, according to Parks Canada, it was often called “bellt of the Bar U,” where cowboys ate, rested, and gathered between work. It also served as a stop for visitors, with meals and coffee always readily available.

From there, the site opens up into more than 35 historic buildings, including barns, saddle and harness shops, tractor sheds, and so much more.

In addition to all the buildings, there is an interpreter-led experience that helps bring everything to life. This experience includes a roping demonstration, cowboy storytelling, along with cowboy coffee and bannock at Roundup camp.

And to tie the whole experience together, there are also some beautiful walking trails like the Peskisko Creek Trail and Viewpoint Trail, which lead you into quieter parts of the property.

The story behind the ranch

The ranch started in the early days of ranching in Western Canada and, over time, became one of the most well-known ranches in the area.

Many different people had resided at the ranch, and each played a role in shaping it. But it really gained prominence under George Lane and Patrick Burns, both of whom helped turn it into a major centre for cattle breeding and Percheron horses.

What makes the ranch special is how it’s remained active and how much of its original structure still exists today. Even after its working years ended, the site is preserved in a way that keeps the story intact and allows visitors to walk through the original buildings and get a sense of what ranch life was like back in the day.

So if you’re looking to get a deeper sense of the history that surrounds us here in Alberta, head over to the ranch and spend some time exploring it for yourself. Walk the trails, check out the buildings, and take in all the stories of the ranch as you explore the site. Alberta’s past is a lot closer than you’d expect!
