Just two out of 48 countries will call Canada home during the FIFA World Cup.
FIFA confirmed the location of each team’s base camp training site on Monday, ahead of the start of the tournament, which kicks off June 11.
“The 48 TBC Training Sites spanning Canada, Mexico and the United States will play a vital role for the participating nations as they get set to compete in the biggest FIFA World Cup ever,” FIFA announced in a media release. “The world-class training facilities each team has selected will become their ‘home away from home,’ and serve as the location where their players, coaches and staff will spend a significant portion of their time throughout the group stage.”
The Canadian men’s national soccer team is one of two teams that have chosen a training site based in Canada. Canada will stay at the Westin Bayshore in Downtown Vancouver and train out of the National Soccer Development Centre at UBC.
Following its opening game in Toronto, Canada plays its remaining two group-stage matches in Vancouver. Should Canada win its group, the team could play up to an additional two knockout-round matches at BC Place. A second-place finish in the group would also keep the team on the West Coast, with a Round of 32 match in Los Angeles.
The other country that will call Canada home during the tournament is Panama, which will set up shop in New Tecumseth, Ont. The team will stay at the Nottawasaga Inn Resort & Conference Centre and practice at the Nottawasaga Training Site.
Panama has its first two matches scheduled for BMO Field (Toronto Stadium), against Ghana on June 17 and Croatia on June 23.
The seven countries that chose to hold base camps in Mexico are teams that have games scheduled in Mexico City, Guadalajara, or Monterrey, with one notable exception.
Iran is setting up shop in Tijuana, likely for geopolitical reasons. All three of Iran’s group-stage matches are set to take place in the United States — two in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.
