This turquoise lake in southern Alberta looks straight out of a postcard

1 June 20263 Mins Read

Picture this: it’s a warm summer day, the sunlight is glistening on the turquoise water as you paddle across the calm lake, with mountain peaks rising in every direction. You can experience all of this at Two Jack Lake, one of Alberta’s most scenic escapes that’s known for its peaceful atmosphere and absolutely unreal scenery.

A simple summer escape with unreal views

Two Jack Lake is located in Banff National Park and is approximately a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Calgary, making it a perfect spot if you’re looking for a quick escape to the mountains without having to venture too far from the city.

Once you get there, you’ll notice the lake is surrounded by luscious pine trees and massive mountain peaks in every direction. Most people tend to spend their time walking the shoreline trail, sitting by the water, or heading out on kayaks or paddleboards when the weather is right. Since this is a glacier-fed lake, swimming is allowed for those brave enough to jump in, but the water remains extremely cold even in the height of summer. Although it may look inviting, it’s still freezing nonetheless.

The lake also offers incredible views of Mount Rundle, and there’s a nearby hiking trail where you can head up for a full view of the lake from above.

Although it doesn’t have your average sandy beach to relax on. There are plenty of pebbled areas along the shoreline where you can sit by the water and take in the views.

The best time to visit the lake is definitely in the summer, especially around sunrise, golden hour, or right before sunset, when the light hits just right, and turns the landscape into a portrait-like masterpiece.

Plan your next mountain escape

Thanks to another summer of the Canada Strong Pass, Canadian citizens can visit the lake for free, making it an even better option if you’re looking for a budget-friendly day trip.

If you’re planning to spend the day out on the water, note that there are no rental facilities, so those looking to paddleboard, kayak, or canoe will need to bring their own.

It’s also a good idea to come prepared with anything you might need for the day, as there aren’t many amenities nearby other than those in Banff. Packing snacks, lifejackets, sunscreen, and other essentials will make your visit a lot more comfortable once you’re out on the lake.

And if you don’t want your day to end there, Banff is just a short drive away, so you can easily extend your trip with some food, shopping, or a bit of exploring around the town.

It’s easy to see photos of Two Jack Lake and understand why it’s so popular, but experiencing it in person is something else entirely. And it’s wild to think that views like this are only a short drive from Calgary.

When: Open year-round
Time: Open 24 hours
Where: 11 km Northeast of Banff National Park, Improvement District No. 9, Alta.
Cost: Free with Canada Strong Pass
