This famous Alberta lake was named one of the cleanest in Canada

3 June 20262 Mins Read

Alberta has tons of beautiful lakes worth visiting, and one spot just earned a new bragging right after being named among the cleanest in Canada.

World Atlas, one of the largest publishing resources in geography, just released a list of the cleanest lakes in Canada based on water-quality data such as nutrient levels and dissolved oxygen.

Known for its turquoise waters and postcard-worthy backdrop, the one and only Lake Louise made the cut.

Located in Banff National Park, about two hours west of Calgary, the mountain lake is fed by meltwater from the Victoria Glacier on Mountain Victoria. World Atlas notes glacier-fed lakes typically carry low nutrient levels that help keep the water clear and vibrant.

The lake is frequently tested and monitored, and due to its remote location, Lake Louise is free of industrial runoff, which contributes to its cleanliness.

While it’s nearly picture-perfect, its famous turquoise colour comes from glacial rock flour, which is mineral runoff from glaciers. So while it is clean, the water isn’t necessarily safe to drink untreated.

Another issue in Lake Louise is whirling disease, which Parks Canada detected in the lake this year. “This is an infectious parasite that devastates trout populations. Because it is pristine alpine water, users are required to clean, drain, and dry their boats before entering the lake,” reads the World Atlas list.

Despite that, Lake Louise is a world-renowned spot all year round. It’s been named among the best winter destinations in the world, as well as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

Lake Louise was the only Alberta spot to make the cut. Other lakes on the list include Emerald Lake in British Columbia, Lake Superior in Ontario, and Kluane Lake in the Yukon.

You can find the full list online.
