This Alberta canyon is home to rare red spherical rocks found nowhere else in Canada

23 June 20263 Mins Read

Red Rock Coulee, just outside of Medicine Hat, is one of Alberta’s most unusual and quietly stunning natural landscapes. Known for its deep red tones and massive rock formations. This hidden gem feels more like something you’d expect to find on Mars.

The site is made up of large, round sandstone concretions that have been naturally shaped over millions of years. These formations, some of which weigh several tonnes, are scattered across the coulee, making it look otherworldly.

A landscape shaped by time

According to Travel Alberta, Red Rock Coulee was formed through a long, gradual and geological process. Over time, layers of sediment compacted and hardened, and the minerals slowly began to bind together, creating the spherical shapes seen today.

One of the things people notice when they first visit is the striking colour of the rocks. Their deep red hue comes from iron oxide, a naturally occurring mineral, otherwise known as rust. The rocks create a dramatic contrast against the surrounding prairie, especially when the sunlight hits their vibrant surface.

What makes the site especially unique isn’t just the size of the formations, but how isolated and untouched the area feels. Unlike more developed parks or tourist-heavy areas, Red Rock Coulee is quiet with plenty of open space that remains relatively undiscovered.

The natural landscape is located about a 45-minute drive from Medicine Hat, and a three-hour drive from Calgary, making it an easy day trip if you’re already exploring southeastern Alberta. Although there are no major facilities on-site, the simplicity of the landscape is part of its appeal. No crowds, no visitor centres, or distractions, just wide open prairies full of towering rock formations.

Whether you’re a geology enthusiast, a photographer, or someone looking for an amazing road trip destination, Red Rock Coulee is well worth the detour. After all, it’s not every day you get to wander through a landscape dotted with red spheres that look like they’ve been dropped from another planet. And while Alberta is famous for its mountains, lakes, and Badlands, places like Red Rock Coulee prove that there’s still plenty of hidden scenery waiting to surprise you.

When: Open year-round
Time: Open 24 hours
Where: Orion, Alta. (45 minutes from Medicine Hat)
Cost: Free to visit
