There was a time when the only reason to sit through the credits of a movie was out of respect for the people who made it. Then came Marvel and the post-credits scene — an extra bit of connective tissue to tie together a vast and expanding cinematic universe. At this point, if you’re watching a movie that’s part of a franchise, it’s a bigger surprise when there isn’t something to see after the credits.
When Superman kicked off James Gunn’s DC Universe in 2025, everyone expected a post-credits scene — and we got one. So what about the DCU’s follow-up film, Supergirl, from director Craig Gillespie? Does it have a post-credits scene? And if so, how important is that scene to the future of the franchise? Read on to find out.
Does Supergirl have a post-credits scene?
There is no post-credits scene after the movie ends. So if you are sitting in your local theater right now reading this on your phone, feel free to get up and leave. You won’t miss anything.
Why doesn’t Supergirl have a post-credits scene?
To answer that question, we have to get into some spoilers.
Warning: Spoilers for the ending of Supergirl below.
According to Gillespie, an earlier version of the film did have a post-credits scene, but he made the choice to ultimately move that sequence up to become the actual ending. The scene in question features a reunion between Supergirl (Milly Alcock) and Superman (David Corenswet) as she returns to Earth, ready to settle into a life of superheroics.
“There was a discussion, but ultimately it was really the scene with Superman,” Gillespie tells Polygon. “Where that landed, it felt better to be part of the film.”
Personally, I still feel like Supergirl could have gone one step further and really set up Man of Tomorrow. Show us Lex Luthor in that mech suit! But apparently, James Gunn is saving it all for his next DC movie.
Supergirl’s ending, explained
While the ending of Supergirl is pretty straightforward, you may be wondering what it means for the future of the franchise. After finally getting revenge on Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) and freeing his prisoners, Supergirl and her pup Krypto head back to Earth. Our hero is done partying (for now) and seems ready to recommit herself to fighting evil and protecting the citizens of Metropolis.
As for what’s next, Alcock’s Supergirl is confirmed to play a role in Gunn’s next movie, Man of Tomorrow, though the plot seems to be more focused on Superman and Lex (Nicholas Hoult) fighting off an attack from the evil cyborg known as Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). However, the next movie after that may put the spotlight back on Alcock.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Supergirl executive producer Lars P. Winther spilled some new details about the future of the DCU:
“Supergirl we shot in London. Clayface was in London. We started shooting Batman 2 about a week and a half ago in London. Man of Tomorrow, which is what we’re shooting now, [Alcock] is in that movie. Without giving too much away, this movie ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in Man of Tomorrow. It’s all more Earth-based. So we have Man of Tomorrow, and we already know what the next movie’s going to be after that, and she’s a big part of that.”
We still don’t know what that movie will be, though Supergirl‘s writer, Ana Nogueira, is also working on a Wonder Woman script, so perhaps a superheroine teamup is in the works. For now, we’ll just have to wait and find out, but hopefully, when Man of Tomorrow arrives in 2027, there’s a post-credits scene to tease whatever comes next.
Supergirl is in theaters now.
