1967 Rock Song, Written by a 19-Year-Old, Became a Timeless Anthem

Nearly 60 years after it was written during one sleepless night, one of rock’s biggest ballads is still a timeless classic that resonates with music fans today.

Decades ago, Justin Hayward, the guitarist and songwriter in the rock band the Moody Blues, was on tour in Belgium when inspiration struck. He was just 19 years old and had only recently joined the band. In the course of one night, he wrote a song that would become a huge hit called “Nights in White Satin.”

Talking to Guitar Player, Hayward recalled how he started writing the track, saying, “I sat on the side of the bed and just wrote the two verses. I was at the end of one big love affair and the beginning of another… I lived every one of the lines in that song.” A girlfriend who gifted him satin bedsheets was a big inspiration.

He claimed the other band members were “indifferent” to the track until keyboardist Mike Pinder added in an interesting riff. Hayward noted, “Suddenly everyone was interested and the song just seemed to make sense.”

The Moody Blues decided to take a chance with the track, and it was released as a single on the 1967 album Days of Future Passed. When it first came out, it was very successful in the U.K., reaching No. 19 on the U.K. Singles Chart. In the U.S., it peaked at 103 the year after it was released.

But that’s not where the song’s legacy ends. “Nights in White Satin” was reissued in 1972. This time, the song reached the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the Moody Blues’ most successful U.S. single. It was later certified gold after over one million copies were sold.

Over the decades, “Nights in White Satin” has charted a few times again. It has become an enduring hit and a true rock classic that fans can’t seem to forget, even 60 years later.
