Catalyst’s release day to 2028

The Tomb Raider franchise suffers yet another delay. Similarly to Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Tomb Raider: Catalyst has now been pushed back by a year and is set to release in 2028 instead.

Two Tomb Raider games, Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst, were announced at the 2025 Game Awards. They were set to release in 2026 and 2027, respectively. However, this is no longer the case for either of them. In early June, Amazon Game Studios, Crystal Dynamics, and Flying Wild Hog announced that Legacy of Atlantis‘s release date had been delayed to Feb. 12, 2027. Since there was a specific release date before then, players took comfort in the fact that it would become available in early 2027, unless any other setbacks should arise.

In an interview with The Game Business, Jeffrey Gattis, Amazon’s head of gaming, briefly mentioned that Tomb Raider: Catalyst was set to launch in 2028, which took many fans by surprise. Since the game had no concrete release date other than its launch year, for all fans know, it might’ve been postponed by a full year.

The interview with Gattis focused on Luna, Amazon’s gaming service, and how the company plans to expand and grow its number of users. Amazon wants to be known for having a wide range of available games so that players can enjoy any sort of experience without having to invest hundreds of dollars in hardware. It was while explaining this that Gattis mentioned the Tomb Raider titles and revealed the delay of Catalyst.

We range from what we call Game Night games, which are those phone-as-a-controller games — single-A titles that are in the single millions of dollars to develop — all the way up to AAA. We have announced the two Tomb Raider titles. [Legacy of] Atlantis comes February 12 next year, and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one. We’re excited about those. There are some other AAA things that are in various stages of discussion right now. Ultimately, we want to build an identity with Luna, where we have a content portfolio that resonates with people, where they think, ‘Oh gosh, that’s the place that has Tomb Raider, and maybe Bond, and they have these other things.’ And that takes time to go build. But, for us to be the platform we want to be, and the one we believe we can be, you very much have to have original content.

It is unknown whether the changes to the initial release dates are related to the fact that the company wants to focus on Amazon Luna first. Regardless, the community seems to be at peace with this announcement, as they don’t want any of the titles to be rushed and result in failure. Additionally, given that Legacy of Atlantis was also delayed, it gives them more time to complete it before moving on to another entry in the series.
