1977 Blockbuster Film, Which Produced 4 No. 1 Hit Songs, Is Ranked One of the Best Soundtracks of All Time

Few movie soundtracks have had the cultural impact of the music featured in Saturday Night Fever.

The 1977 dance film starring John Travoltaand Karen Lynn Gorney was not only a blockbuster movie, but a pop culture phenomenon, thanks to the accompanying album that helped define the sound of the disco era.

The movie’s legendary soundtrack, featuring several songs by the Bee Gees, produced four massive No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the best-selling soundtracks ever released. It’s even ranked at No. 5 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 101 Greatest Soundtracks of All Time.

The album featured three Bee Gees songs that went No. 1 after the film’s release, including “Stayin’ Alive,” which reigned at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks, “How Deep Is Your Love,” with a three-week run, and “Night Fever,” which held the No. 1 position for a eight straight weeks. “If I Can’t Have You” by Yvonne Elliman also spent one week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in May 1978.

The Bee Gees’ hit “You Should Be Dancing” reached the top of the charts in 1976, meaning it was already a No. 1 hit by the time it was featured on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Meanwhile, other notable songs on the album include “Boogie Shoes” by KC & The Sunshine Band and “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps.

Billboard ranks “How Deep Is Your Love” as the No. 3 Top Movie Song of All Time, while “Night Fever” is ranked at No. 6. and “Stayin’ Alive” is No. 10 on the same list.
