I Missed Hamilton Fringe This Year. I’m Not Making That Mistake Again. – front mezz junkies, Theater News

Frontmezzjunkies reports: Missing this year’s festival only made me realize how essential Hamilton Fringe has become

By Ross

Last summer I surprised myself by just diving into the Hamilton Fringe without really knowing why, not really sure what to expect. I wandered around, going for a drink here, a meal there, but more importantly, taking in as many shows as I could over a long weekend. What I ended up discovering was a whole heap of artistic energy, along with a handful of productions I’ll never forget. I should have known better. I left wondering why it had taken me so long to experience one of Canada’s most joyful theatre festivals. There is something wonderfully infectious about the way Hamilton embraces its Fringe. Every available space seems to open its doors to artists and audiences, with conversations spilling onto sidewalks, and the overpowering exhilaration that the next unforgettable performance might be waiting just around the corner.

This year, I wasn’t able to make the trip, unfortunately. Life, a new home, and the summer sometimes get in the way. Following the festival from afar was bittersweet, but hearing about this year’s award winners and seeing the community celebrate another remarkable season only reinforced what I discovered last year. Hamilton Fringe continues to be one of the country’s most vibrant homes for adventurous theatre, and it confirmed something I had already been thinking. Missing it this year was a mistake I have no intention of repeating.

Then, after asking for votes from the critics and audience members alike, Hamilton Festival Theatre Company announced the award recipients from the 22nd Annual Hamilton Fringe Festival. The 11-day event welcomed audiences to 50 productions across 16 venues, alongside more than 50 outdoor events throughout the city. This year’s honours reflected both the breadth of work presented and the enthusiasm of those who cast nearly 800 votes for the Audience Choice Award.

Among the festival’s biggest success stories, Townsperson #3 by Etemadi Entertainment captured both the inaugural Critics’ Pick Award and the Audience Choice Award, earning recognition from reviewers and audiences alike. Meanwhile, Felt Cute, Might Overshare Later by Kristi Boulton Presents… continued its impressive festival run by receiving both Best in Fest and Best in Series for the Indie Venues.

One of the announcements that touched me most was the introduction of the Cairine Wilson Spirit of the Fringe Award, created to honour the memory of one of Hamilton Fringe‘s most beloved supporters. The inaugural award was presented to volunteer and artist Corey Long after receiving six separate nominations from members of the Fringe community. It feels like exactly the sort of recognition that captures what makes Fringe festivals so special. They celebrate not only productions, but also the people whose generosity helps build the community around them.

The festival itself continues to grow in exciting directions. Fringe Boulevard once again transformed King William Street into the beating heart of the celebration with free performances, music, visual art, markets, drag, and family programming. New additions such as Foodie Fringe brought local restaurants directly into the festivities, while Neechie Boulevard offered an entire day of Indigenous programming created by Indigenous community members. Returning favourites such as Fringe On The Streets once again turned downtown Hamilton into an immersive stage where audiences could experience live performance while exploring the city itself.

Looking back through everything I missed this year also reinforced just how adventurous Hamilton Fringe has become. Whether audiences found themselves discovering a new musical, fantasy comedy, clown performance, intimate solo show, or one of this year’s New Play Contest winners, the festival once again embraced exactly the kind of creative risks that Fringe festivals were always meant to encourage.

Missing this year’s Hamilton Fringe only confirmed what I already suspected after last year’s visit. Festivals like this become far more than calendars filled with performances. They become communities built around curiosity, generosity, and the joy of taking a chance on something completely unknown. Reading about this year’s award winners and remembering the excitement of wandering from venue to venue last summer has me looking ahead to next July, when I fully intend to find myself back on King William Street, discovering whatever wonderful surprises Hamilton Fringe has waiting next. And I’m not going to let anything get in my way again.

Here’s a list of this year’s 2026 Hamilton Fringe Festival Award Recipients:
