Price Drives Last-Minute Travel Plans as Summer Nears Its End

12 August 20262 Mins Read

In Brief: A survey of 2,000 Americans found that 61% had not taken a vacation during the summer, while 59% said they had not had enough vacation time. Price was the leading factor cited for considering a last-minute getaway.

Many Americans Report No Summer Trip

A majority of Americans surveyed said they had not taken a vacation during the summer season. The research found that 61% of respondents had not yet traveled, while 59% said they did not feel they had enough vacation time.

Nearly one-quarter of those surveyed (23%) said they did not believe they had made the most of their summer. 13% said they had many remaining items on their summer to-do lists, while another 13% said financial pressures had altered their plans.

Eleven percent said they were still trying to fit in another trip before the end of summer.

The survey was conducted by Talker Research on behalf of CheapCaribbean Vacations.

Social Media Influences Travel Interest

Two-thirds of respondents (67%) said social media contributes to their interest in searching for last-minute trips. Thirty-eight percent said they regularly or constantly experience an urge to travel after seeing social media content.

Last-Minute Bookings Are Common

Forty-three percent of respondents said they had booked a vacation within two weeks of departure.

Eight percent said they search for last-minute deals every day. Another 24% said they check for deals at least weekly, while 34% said they search at least several times per month.

Cost was the most frequently cited reason for considering a late booking. Thirty-six percent said they would book a last-minute getaway because a deal was too favorable to ignore. Twenty-four percent said such travel makes summer feel more exciting, and 22% said it provides a sense of spontaneity.

Among respondents who had previously booked a last-minute trip, the estimated average savings was $785. Twenty-one percent said they had saved between $250 and $499.

Value Remains the Leading Incentive

When asked what would most likely encourage another last-minute vacation, 25% of respondents selected a strong travel deal. That was followed by family invitations (24%), good weather (20%), and a long weekend (19%).

Beach Trips Lead Destination Preferences

Beach destinations were the most popular choice among respondents considering a last-minute vacation. National parks followed, with 31% naming them as a preferred trip type. Major cities were selected by 30%, and tropical destinations were selected by 25%.
