Europe’s Must-See Natural Wonders Have Been Named, Canada Reviews

13 August 20262 Mins Read

Europe is full of brilliant cities, but a new list from The Telegraph is a reminder that some weird and wonderful natural phenomena are hiding in plain sight across the continent. Fifteen spots made the final cut and a handful are strange enough to make you do a double take.

Take Romania’s Trovants of Costesti, nicknamed ‘living stones’ for their unsettling habit of appearing to grow after heavy rain. The effect comes from calcium carbonate seeping into the rocks’ porous shells and reacting with the minerals inside, making the results look like a mix of a Henry Moore sculpture and a dinosaur egg. They can even reproduce when bulbous nodules break off and start growing on their own.

Then there’s the Faroe Islands’ Lake Leitisvatn, which pulls off a brilliant optical illusion: from certain angles, its shoreline lines up perfectly with the cliff edge below it, making the water appear to float suspended high above the ocean. It’s a stunning photo opportunity with a darker backstory, since Norse Vikings reportedly used the site to dispose of slaves back in the ninth century.

Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes makes the list too. It’s a network of 16 lakes linked by more than 90 waterfalls, glowing improbable shades of turquoise thanks to limestone tufa terraces. Over in Greece, the sandstone pillars of Meteora still host six active monasteries, originally reached via rope ladders and supply nets by fourteenth-century monks seeking total isolation. And in France, the Verdon Gorge claims the title of Europe’s grandest canyon, its turquoise river winding through limestone cliffs so deep they went largely unexplored until the early twentieth century.
