Toronto Is Getting Its First Professional Flag Football Event, Canada Reviews

20 August 20263 Mins Read

Move over CFL, flag football is having a moment, globally, and Toronto is about to get a front-row seat.

World Flag Series (WFS) has announced that Canada’s first professional flag football event will be held Sept. 19 at York Lions Stadium, just weeks after both Canada’s senior men’s and women’s national teams qualified for flag football’s Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

And, if the numbers around the world are to believed, this is only the beginning.

Apparently, the schoolyard version of tackle football, flag football is played by more than 20 million people in more than 100 countries, according to international governing body IFAF.

The growth is particularly notable among girls and women. More than 250 American colleges and universities now offer women’s flag football programs complete with varsity level athletes and the chance to pursue scholarships.

And now, professional sports opportunities are starting to follow.

The World Flag Series launched its inaugural professional women’s event in Tampa in July and is now expanding to Toronto.

But it doesn’t begin and end with the World Flag Series.

The NFL has partnered with TMRW (Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy) Sports to launch professional men’s and women’s flag football leagues in 2027, backed by a reported $32 million commitment from the NFL.

The NFL has also been steadily promoting the sport through its Pro Bowl games, which feature flag football rather than traditional tackle football.

The timing is no coincidence. With flag football joining the Olympic program in Los Angeles in 2028, there is a major push to establish professional leagues, build fan bases and create a pathway for athletes before the Games arrive.

In Toronto, WFS2 will feature 30 elite female athletes from more than 10 countries, including Canadian national team players and international champions.

Three teams will compete: defending WFS champions H.E.R. (Hustle Every Rep), the returning Glitter Bombs and the newly introduced Midnight Ballers. The defending champions include reigning WFS MVP and quarterback Haylie Young, star receiver Tori Brito, Ontario native Olivia Ghosh-Swaby (pictured at top) and Canadian star Clara Beaudoin. The Glitter Bombs will feature WFS1 Offensive Player of the Tournament Rylee Bolser and American star Lauren Clark.

For Toronto, it is a chance to see a sport that is still relatively new to the professional stage before it blows up.

Flag football is essentially a non-contact version of American football. Instead of tackling a player to end a play, defenders pull a flag attached to the ball carrier. It is very fast and emphasises speed and agility and sheer athletic talent.

That accessibility is a big part of the sport’s appeal. It eliminates much of the physical contact associated with tackle football while opening the game to a broader range of players.

“Canada is having a moment in flag football,” said Philip Cutler, founder and CEO of World Flag Series. “Both national teams are headed to the Olympics, participation is exploding, and Canadian athletes are proving they belong among the best in the world.”

Toronto’s WFS2 event could be an early glimpse of what that future looks like.
