Days Before Beyoncé Took the Super Bowl Stage, She Shared the Powerful Lesson About Self-Worth That Helped Her Become a Global Superstar

4 September 20266 Mins Read

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter was born on September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas. But long before she became one of the most celebrated performers in the world, she was a young girl with a powerful voice and big dreams.

At just 9 years old, she began performing with the group that would eventually become Destiny’s Child, alongside childhood friends. But the road to stardom was never easy. Destiny’s Child experienced setbacks early on, including losing on Star Search and being dropped from a recording contract before releasing an album.

But Beyoncé kept going. In 1997, the group signed with Columbia Records, and Destiny’s Child went on to become one of the most successful girl groups in music history, with hits including “Say My Name,” “Survivor” and “Bootylicious.”

When Destiny’s Child members eventually pursued individual projects, Beyoncé’s career continued to soar. Her 2003 solo debut, Dangerously in Love, established her as a force in her own right, powered by songs such as “Crazy in Love.” She won five Grammy Awards for the album, setting the stage for a career that would expand far beyond music into acting, entrepreneurship, visual art and cultural activism.

More than two decades into her solo career, Beyoncé has become one of the most accomplished artists of all time. As Oprah Winfrey marveled after she saw Beyoncé’s Renaissance concert at MetLife Stadium in 2023, “I have never in my life experienced something as transcendent as @beyonce’s Renaissance Tour,” she wrote on Instagram. “That kind of talent, synergy, expression, and anointing is something that comes straight from a Source that creates the planets.” And when Stephen Colbert asked Michelle Obama if she could trade places with anyone, who would it be, Obama answered without hesitation: “If I had some gift,” she said. “I’d be Beyoncé.”

Beyoncé has broken Grammy records, continually reinvented her sound and pushed the boundaries of what a pop superstar can create. Yet beneath the awards, stadium tours and cultural influence is a lesson Beyoncé has returned to throughout her career: Success means little if you don’t know your own worth.

Quote of the Day by Beyoncé

“Your self-worth is determined by you. You don’t have to depend on someone telling you who you are.”
Beyoncé shared these words in an interview outtake published by GQ on January 22, 2013. At the time, she was navigating an extraordinary period in both her career and personal life. She had recently become a mother to her daughter, Blue Ivy, with husband Jay-Z, and was preparing for a major professional comeback that included headlining the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show, the release of her HBO documentary Life Is But a Dream and a new world tour.

The GQ interview offered a glimpse of Beyoncé thinking about independence, relationships and the importance of knowing yourself. She reflected on how a person’s confidence can affect a relationship, arguing that nobody should need another person to define their value. Coming from an artist who had spent years building her own career and identity, the sentiment carried particular weight: Beyoncé wasn’t simply talking about confidence as an idea; she was speaking from years of experience learning to trust her own voice.

Deeper Meaning of Beyoncé’s Quote

Beyoncé’s quote is about taking ownership of the way you see yourself. Compliments feel so good. Awards can validate hard work. And the approval of people we love can matter deeply. But none of those things should determine our fundamental sense of worth. That has to come from within.

There’s also an important distinction between confidence and perfection in Beyoncé’s words. Her career has been built on a great level of discipline. But she has also spoken openly about fear, mistakes and the pressure to appear as though she has everything under control. Knowing your worth doesn’t mean believing you are flawless. It means understanding that failure, criticism or someone else’s opinion doesn’t erase your value.

No matter who you are, there will always be people willing to tell you what you should be. Beyoncé’s reminder is to listen to your own voice, trust your own judgment and remember that your worth was never theirs to give or take away.

More Quotes from Beyoncé

“Vision and intention weren’t enough; I had to put in the work. I committed to always being a student and always being open to growth.”

“I have paid my dues and followed every rule for decades, so now I can break the rules that need to be broken. My wish for the future is to continue to do everything everyone thinks I can’t do.”

“I break chains all by myself /Won’t let my freedom rot in hell / Hey! I’ma keep running / ‘Cause a winner don’t quit on themselves”

“The reality is: Sometimes you lose. And you’re never too good to lose. You’re never too big to lose. You’re never too smart to lose. It happens. And it happens when it needs to happen. And you need to embrace those things.”

“I remember when I started hearing people criticize me after I had put on some weight. I was 19. None of the sample clothes fit me. I was feeling a bit insecure from hearing some of the comments, and I woke up one day and refused to feel sorry for myself, so I wrote ‘Bootylicious.’ It was the beginning of me using whatever life handed me and turning it into something empowering to other women and men who were struggling with the same thing.”

“I’ve spent so many years trying to better myself and improve whatever I’ve done that I’m at a point where I no longer need to compete with myself. I have no interest in searching backwards. The past is the past.”

“I pulled together these young visionaries and independent thinkers to collaborate with. I wanted strong women to be in key roles throughout my company, when most of the industry was still male dominated. I wanted collaborators who had not been jaded by the corporate world and wouldn’t be afraid to rock with me when I came up with unconventional ideas, a team that would challenge me but wouldn’t be conditioned to say you’re not supposed to do something.”

“I’m grateful I have the ability to choose what I want to share. One day I decided I wanted to be like Sade and Prince. I wanted the focus to be on my music, because if my art isn’t strong enough or meaningful enough to keep people interested and inspired, then I’m in the wrong business. My music, my films, my art, my message—that should be enough.”

“In this business, so much of your life does not belong to you unless you fight for it. I’ve fought to protect my sanity and my privacy because the quality of my life depended on it. A lot of who I am is reserved for the people I love and trust.”
