1997 Folk-Rock Song, Written by Bob Dylan, Among ‘Greatest Rock Song Lyrics of All Time’

18 September 20263 Mins Read

When people think of the best singer-songwriters in music history, Bob Dylan is usually a name that comes to mind. He is well-known for his beautiful prose, and he even won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature for his lyricism in song.

But given that Dylan has written over 600 songs over the years, there’s bound to be debate over what is truly his best work. According to some music fans, it’s his song “Not Dead Yet.”

The track was released in 1997 on his 30th studio album, Time Out of Mind. The entire album received great acclaim when it came out, with Time Out of Mind winning three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

So for devoted Dylan fans, it might not be too much of a surprise to learn about the renown of “Not Dark Yet” and its lyrics.

“Not Dark Yet” explores the impending mortality that everyone faces as they get older. Many connect the song to Dylan’s experience in 1997 with a life-threatening heart infection that had him wondering if it was the end.

He was reported as saying while in recovery, “I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m just glad to be feeling better. I really thought I’d be seeing Elvis soon.”

The song reflects this perspective in its lyrics, with lines like, “Feel like my soul has turned into steel/ I’ve still got the scars that the sun didn’t heal/ There’s not even room enough to be anywhere/ It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there.”

Forbes included the song in its list of the “Greatest Rock Song Lyrics of All Time,” with other greats on the list being Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Bruce Springsteen, among others.

The publication spotlighted the specific line, “I ain’t look for nothing in anyone’s eyes/Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear.” Forbes noted that this lyric “is characteristic of the magnificence of Time Out Of Mind, one of the greatest albums ever about aging and mortality.”

Fans feel the same way, with one commenting on the music video to say, “This song is soo underrated. I think it’s one of his masterpieces.”

Others wrote, “The song goes straight to my soul,” and “This is one of Dylan’s most poetic, deeply sentimental pieces, can listen over and over and find it has linked with every part of my life over the years.”
