Here’s what to know about Toronto’s new upcoming train station

19 September 20263 Mins Read

A brand-new GO Transit station in Toronto commenced major construction activity this week, soon to bring new transit options to an area of the city that remains critically underserved.

Provincial officials celebrated the start of major construction at Woodbine GO Station on Thursday, the latest step towards GO Transit’s generational expansion.

Set to be one of the busiest stations on the GO network once operational, Woodbine GO will replace the nearby Etobicoke North Station — which the province says “lacks the capacity to accommodate future growth along the line.”

The new station on GO’s Kitchener Line is described by Metrolinx President and CEO Michael Lindsay as a new “front door to world-class gaming and racing,” bringing new transit to within walking distance of Woodbine Racetrack, as well as other local draws like Humber Polytechnic North Campus (and its over 19,000 full-time students), Woodbine Mall, and Etobicoke General Hospital.

“The start of major construction at Woodbine GO is great news for families and commuters in Etobicoke and along the entire Kitchener Line,” said Premier Doug Ford, who touted the province’s “historic expansion of GO service across the Greater Golden Horseshoe,” and promised that “this new station will increase capacity, cut travel times, and connect thousands more people to reliable, affordable transit.”

Thursday’s announcement follows earlier site preparation work, including clearing, grading, and excavation work that commenced in 2025, along with installation of a temporary track separation and two access bridges that set the stage for the now-active platform construction.

The new station will feature island platforms serving GO Transit and UP Express trains, as well as a bus loop connecting riders to local TTC, MiWay, York Region Transit and Brampton Transit routes, dedicated parking for GO riders, and pedestrian bridges.

Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria promises that “Woodbine GO Station will make it faster and easier for Ontarians to get where they’re going, whether they’re travelling for work, school, entertainment, or catching a flight at Pearson Airport.”

Metrolinx has not yet announced an opening date for the new station, but that hasn’t dampened the excitement from nearby businesses like the adjacent Woodbine Racetrack.

Michael Copeland, CEO of Woodbine Entertainment, called the new station “transformative,” hailing the transit expansion as a key to the “major new urban development centred around Woodbine Racetrack.”

“Horse racing will remain the heart and soul of the destination, with new communities, activities, and investment not only building a new cornerstone in our city but also helping to strengthen the future of our sport in Ontario,” said Copeland.
