Several movie studios have been fighting over the rights to make a film based on the Battlefield video game franchise. A winner has reportedly emerged, and it’s one with connections to gaming: Sony Pictures.
What we know about the Battlefield movie
Reports of a potential Battlefield movie first emerged earlier this year, with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s Christopher McQuarrie attached to direct and Sinners’ Michael B. Jordan attached to star. On Oct. 2, TheWrap then reported that this was still the case and that Sony Pictures had come out on top in the bidding war for the movie. As Sony also produces the PlayStation video game consoles, it makes sense as to why Sony Pictures would want to make the movie.
Studios like Warner Bros. Discovery (now part of Paramount), Amazon MGM Studios, Universal, and Netflix were all reportedly interested in this Battlefield adaptation. That highlights just how in demand movies based on video games are following the success of A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s massive box office success in recent years.
Plot details for the movie remain unknown, and the Battlefield games’ settings have ranged from 2142 all the way back to World War 1. Battlefield 6, the most recent game in the series, was more grounded in modern-day warfare, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this adaptation went in that direction. Thankfully, Sony Pictures has a fairly solid recent track record with video game movies.
Sony Pictures has previously worked with PlayStation Productions to make movies based on first-party gaming franchises such as Uncharted, Until Dawn, and Gran Turismo, with more adaptations in the works based on games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2. Sony Pictures has also ventured into video game adaptations for properties not directly owned by PlayStation, as it had a hand in making and releasing the most recent Resident Evil movie. Battlefield is shaping up to be its next big venture on that front.
Since the Battlefield movie isn’t in production yet, we don’t have a release date. If you’re interested in movies based on other first-person shooter games, though, a Call of Duty movie from Paramount Pictures is currently slated for release on June 30, 2028.
