Square Enix is lending out the cast of Nier: Automata for another crossover. This time, three members of the acclaimed RPG’s cast are coming to asymmetric multiplayer survival horror game Dead by Daylight. If that sounds exciting, then good news, the collaboration is available as of today, Oct. 6.
Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive announced the game’s latest crossover in a reveal trailer posted to social media. On the partnership, creative director Dave Richard had this to say:
Beyond the amazing characters and incredible visuals, there’s a definite connection between the themes of our two universes, both dealing with cycles of violence and suffering. Bringing 2B, A2, and Emil into The Fog gave us a chance to help celebrate what makes Nier: Automata so special to us.”
Unlike previous collaborations, the characters will be reskins of existing characters rather than completely new additions. On the Survivors’ side, Feng Min is getting a 2B skin and Yui Kimura is getting an A2 skin. Both will be Legendary Outfits that come with unique music, voice lines, HUD icons, menu idle animations, and more. As for the Killer side, The Legion is getting a Very Rare Outfit inspired by Emil. This will also sort of make it feel like Nier creator Yoko Taro is personally hunting you down, so that’s fun. The collection also includes an appearance by Pod 042 and Legendary portraits of 2B and A2.
Is Square Enix working on a Nier: Automata sequel?
It’s been almost a decade since Square Enix released Nier: Automata to widespread critical acclaim, but there is no news on a follow-up. Rather than a true sequel, Square Enix has instead focused on crossovers with various titles. Taro previously joked in an interview that these crossovers continue to happen because he is a “slave to capitalism, so I will do anything as long as I am paid and will do nothing if there’s no money in it.”
Technically, Taro did make NieR 3 in the form of the mobile gacha game Nier: Reincarnation. Die-hard fans (of which I am one) insist that Reincarnation was an important continuation of the series’ overarching story that people wrote off, but it was shut down in 2024. In 2025, Taro revealed that he’s attempted to work on several new projects, but they all got canceled, though it wasn’t made clear if one such project was a Nier game. While it doesn’t seem like a priority for Square Enix, fans still hold out hope that the series will return.
