Florence Pugh’s highly anticipated prestige drama East of Eden has officially hit Netflix, bringing John Steinbeck’s Salinas Valley to screens globally. But did audiences turn out for the sprawling American epic? Here is your deep dive into the show’s opening weekend performance on the Netflix Top 10s, its global popularity, and the massive bump it’s giving the publishing industry.

Zoe Kazan’s fresh seven-episode adaptation of the 1952 masterpiece stars Florence Pugh as the cunning Cathy Ames, whose life dangerously intertwines with the Trask family—especially brothers Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles (Mike Faist)—as they live out the dark side of the California dream. Backed by a heavyweight supporting cast including Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Hoon Lee, and Ciarán Hinds, the limited series is already making major waves.

Let’s break down the data for its opening weekend (four days on the service, Thursday through Sunday).

How East of Eden Performed in the Netflix Global Top 10s

Audiences definitely flocked to the Salinas Valley. East of Eden easily secured the #1 spot on the Global Top 10 English TV list for its opening weekend, pulling in 6.5 million views.

Looking at the underlying math, the hefty seven-episode series racked up approximately 45.5 million hours viewed. Divided by its roughly 7-hour runtime, you get the 6.5 million Completed Viewing Equivalent (CVE) or “views” metric that Netflix uses to rank its titles.

So, how does that 6.5 million debut compare to other recent Netflix limited series?

Looking at our opening week tracking chart for limited series, East of Eden lands right in the middle of the pack—a very solid start for a dense, prestige literary adaptation. Its 6.5M debut places it just behind Black Rabbit (6.6M) and Eric (6.8M), but it managed to edge out The Residence (6.4M), A Man in Full (6.3M), and Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher (6.3M).

While it’s not touching the stratosphere of mega-hits like Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (22.9M) or The Watcher (22.3M), this is exactly where a heavy, critical-darling period drama usually aims to land.

Regional Performance: Total European Domination

Beyond the global total, the daily top 10 data provided by FlixPatrol gives us an even better idea of where the show is resonating most. And it is a phenomenal climber.

On its premiere day (October 2nd), the series held a global average ranking of 4.9. Fast forward to today, and that global average has surged to an impressive 1.9. It has hit the Top 10 in 80 countries worldwide and managed to claim the overall #1 spot in 22 of them.

Here’s a breakdown of the regional trends:

  • Total European Domination: The series is an absolute juggernaut in Europe. As of today, it holds the #1 spot in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Ukraine, and Ireland, among many others.
  • The Americas: East of Eden is performing exceptionally well across the Americas, holding the #1 spot in Canada, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. Over in the United States, the show debuted at #2, climbed to the #1 spot over the weekend, and is currently holding strong at #2 today.
  • Middle East & Africa: The period drama has found a massive audience here, securing the #1 spot in Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
  • A Slower Burn in Asia: While it’s a global hit, the series is taking a little longer to climb to the top of the charts in certain Asian markets. It’s hovering in the middle-to-lower half of the lists today in countries like India (#6), the Philippines (#6), Thailand (#6), Singapore (#8), and Hong Kong (#9).

“Netflix Effect” and Critical Reception

If there’s one thing Netflix is incredibly good at, it’s pushing older media back into the cultural zeitgeist.

Since Netflix officially greenlit the series, Penguin Classics reported a nearly 200% increase in book sales across all formats. Following this weekend’s release, the “Netflix bump” shifted into overdrive: John Steinbeck’s original novel reached the No. 1 spot on the Amazon Best Sellers List. Furthermore, the audiobook has successfully captured the younger demographic, landing on the retail giant’s “Best of #BookTok” list.

How is the show doing critically? Very well, and Netflix has its sights aimed high.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the show is currently sitting at a Certified Fresh 86% Average Tomatometer from critics, with audiences largely agreeing, holding an 82% Average Popcornmeter.

Perhaps most importantly for Netflix, the streamer is already positioning East of Eden as a major contender for the upcoming awards season. The show is currently listed at #2 on the official Netflix Awards page for Limited Series. With Florence Pugh leading the charge, expect to see this title dominating For Your Consideration campaigns over the next year.
